2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
I'm I the only one that is in total shock over the money be brought in by the 79 and 80 Trans Am's at Barrett Jackson?
$170,000 for the 10th Anniversary car that is still in the wrapper!!! Unbelievable in my opinion! Dave |
Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
Yup, and an 84 20th Anniversary Mustang convertible brought $71,500 with fees. Not shocked, exactly, but it's interesting.

Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
The demographics are shifting to the 70s and 80s. An 84 Mustang is now 32 years old. Guys have always liked the cars of their generation. Those that grew up seeing Formulas, T/As, Z28s and 5.0 GTs will be the generation that restores cars.
|
Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
How plentiful do you guys think that nos parts are available for the 2nd generation compared to 67-69?
|
Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
...Not nearly as plentiful as the alcohol flowing at the auction which is the main reason for the insane prices paid.
|
Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
I know that '79 T/A is absurd! How about a '54 'Vette doing $200 thou? It was a good one but I've never seen ANY '54 do $200,000.00
|
Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
More evidence to prove younger guys like me are priced way out of the market, and probably always will be. I remember a few years ago, a '79 T/A was cheap-ish. I like them, always have, but they were entry level. Same with foxbody Mustangs, and if a 1984 went for 71.5k, I fear us younger guys will never afford muscle cars, since the new ones are just as expensive.

I'm surprised to hear you say that. People that were kids when those late 70's cars came out are in their late 40's early 50's now and now have the money are buying the cars of their dreams. I don't see any difference in those cars as to people paying 300k for a yenko or Hemi or what we liked when we were kids. No car is WORTH that money. It's what your willing to pay to make you happy. A long time ago a guy I met told me you can never spend too much on a good car, your just buying a little early. Take that for what it's worth. |

You're not going out hunting LS-6 Chevelle's in a stock one, but some very basic tweaking makes it a formidable street car. Big price spikes like this always start out as anomaly. 60's musclecars went from borderline worthless to shockingly valuable through a series of similar anomalies. |

110K for a 1980 turbo in the wrapper. I was sitting with JW and Tenney at R&S Newport a couple years ago when J Dubs 10TH with 30 miles hammered for around 60k, and that one belonged to the man. How many tens of thousands of starlight black TA's did they make? Insane indeed. Conversely, the monkey garage cat got whacked on his serial# one & two gen 5 COPO's, what a look on his face.. |

What did the Monkey copos sell for ?

Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
The '79 had 9 miles and was showroom fresh.
I watched last night for a while and the ego factor was in full swing. There were, however, some good buys. The '66 Olds 442 post was well bought. |

how about the black LS6 190 thousand US dollars thats about 269 thousand Canadian
are they really worth that much money, can it really be the free drinks??? Or some of us have underestimated the value of our cars EH!! PJ |

In addition to Jim & Joe (Dirt) provenance, it's a 4spd, and so has the 400 (last year Pontiac motor). Per JW, they'd pitched a different interior scheme for the 10th, but GM had a bunch of silver leather and carpet kicking around from the '78 Pace Car and Silver Anniversary 'Vettes, so that's what it got. Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
That would have been a car parked at universal studios to promote the movie. They did the same thing for "back to the future", universal studios had a delorean at florida and california. I would bet that universal studios in california also had a TA just like this one with the same plaque on the dash.

I wonder how much Burt got paid to "promote" the car?

This place has some nice T/A's very reasonable priced. I hope he doesn't adjust them based on these auction results. |
Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
Nothing magical as to why those T/A's are going for huge jack. As a prior poster noted, these were their dream cars growing up. Who cares about performance? The look alone is why these cars sold in huge numbers. Any car can go fast with internal work.
Cars like the 93, 96 & 2000 Cobra-R's will be the next to hit the $150,000 marker. Just like the 87 GNX's did before them. |
Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
When I see a 1978 Corvette pace car with the L82 engine still in the wrapper go for $50,000 at the same auction it makes me question the TA prices even more. The Corvette is from same era and had a lot of hype ever since it was built.

1978 Corvettes were a lot more money than the 1978 Trans Am and Z28. So, "everyone" had a Trans Am or a Z28, but very few people had a Corvette. That is what makes the Trans Am's and Z28's more valuable today as that was the car everyone dreamed about. I was just finished school and starting to work at that time. I looked at ordering a new '79 Z28. Then, this '72 Z28 came up for sale, Mulsane Blue, with blue interior and an M22. the rest is history. |
Re: 2nd Gen Trans Am$ at Barrett Jackson
I would venture a guess that the 1980's IROC Z/28s are the next ones to jump up in value. I had one a few years ago (a yellow '87 I found in my neighbor's yard) and sold it to a fellow member here. They are great handling cars and surprisingly quick too. The same way the late 1970's guys are looking for their highschool cars, these will be the next target of acquisition. Low mileage unmessed with examples are few and far between. So buy them up now.
Hard to believe this was 10 years ago! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...opics/187461/1 |

That was a two pedal, but then again so was that 10th. Shades of 07 BJ and less than asute buyers with more skrilla than sense?. I mean really, who on here would have paid that kind of coin for those cars?. And to the argument gen X'ers are the buying influence now, there are only a few years spread between real period muscle and these. Think it's just a couple of bubble cars that caught some serious tailwind. There were some good buys on SD's at Kissimmie..jmho |

I'd bet we see ultra low mile 93 Cobra's and 89 Turbo Trans Am's closing in on a hundred grand within the next couple of years, although I could be wrong. I've been saying Fox Bodies are due for a good sized jump for the past three years, but I'd have never guessed it would be an 84 Anni leading the way.

But there is a flip side. There was a 79 Pace car mustang turbo 4 that went off sunday still had the original wheels and aluminum rear drums and it went for like 7k ... It all depends on what time it crosses the block and who wants it bad enough
