Re: COPO Positraction Unit 12 Bolt

Where does the part number 3916234 appear on the unit?? I can see the #174...

Or maybe the better question is...how do you identify a copo unit from a regular 4 series carrier??

thanks..wilma

Re: COPO Positraction Unit 12 Bolt

Doesn't the Copo have different spider gears & clutch pack ? I have seen a heavy duty 3 series with the square hole in it aswell..

Re: COPO Positraction Unit 12 Bolt

The COPO carrier carries the same casting # as the standard 4 series carrier, the actual PN does not appear on the unit.
The clutch pack is not COPO specific. Here is what is. The side gears, spider gears and thrust washers, the springs and spring plates. And the housing is machined for the larger spider gear and thrust washers.
Great unit How many COPO Camaros and Chevelles out there have the good stuff inside, not that many..

Re: COPO Positraction Unit 12 Bolt

Matt, were you able to get the part numbers off the gears to authenticate correctly that this is a coop rear? Or I guess the gears are substantially thicker by looking at them?

Re: COPO Positraction Unit 12 Bolt

There's no part numbers on the gears. You just have to go by shape and tooth count. This also has the correct spring plates and springs which are unique to the COPO units as well. This also has a known COPO assembly date.

Killer piece!

Thanks guys. It's priced to move. I'd rather see it end up in a COPO car where it belongs than languish around on my garage shelf.

That's why at all the NATIONAL JUDGED events ...it should be mandatory to drop the inspection cover ...or lose those points...build the price of gasket and gear oil into the registration fee. I had to provide photos once after a show when I got the call from the head judge ....and welcomed the request. It's nice to know what you have is real. GLWS

I don't have my picture files handy, but I'm pretty sure that the gears should be date stamped pretty close to the rear assembly date.

That's what I thought.

So you're saying that the spider gears are stamped with a date on COPO units? Where? I haven't had this particular unit apart but I've had plenty of standard units apart and have never seen the spider gears stamped with anything.

Re: COPO Positraction Unit 12 Bolt

I don't know about the spiders but the ring and pinion should be dated with the ratio.

Re: COPO Positraction Unit 12 Bolt

He is talking about the 226 and 228 ring and pinion...with a June dated 234 carrier .....the ring and pinion are usually dated May and June
