Re: ce 512 bbc stamping

I believe the '0' refers to a 1970 build.

CE Chevrolet Engine
0 2 7819
1970 Feb. Sequence
As sequence ends it starts again as
CEA yr.mo. 0001
Have seen CEB & CEC Stampings.
A Misuse of terms is CE "BLOCK"
AS MOST CE's Were Engine assemblies known as. Partial Assembly "Short Blocks"
or Engine Assembly "Long Block"
Catalog items.
Bare Block w Caps
Fitted Block (Partial) (Fitted Pistons)
Partial Engine Assembly. Block & Rotating assem.
Engine Assembly "Long block assm."
Most All L88 CE 's seen today were Complete engines - bolt-ons
Most LS 7's were also sold as Complete Engine.

Re: ce 512 bbc stamping

To Clear up a lot of Mis Use of. "CE"

NOT VERY MANY BARE BLOCK CE 's were Sold in Relation to the High Volume of Short Blocks and Long Blocks.
CE Engines were common purchases
And or Warranty replaced.
Most warranty CE's were Short Blocks.

Dealer Conversions to a bigger engine were either
CE assemblies or short blocks. depending on what Finished result was needed.
396-375 to.427. upgraded with L72 CE short blocks.
350 to. 396/427. Was an Engine assembly.

Looks like a complete assembly was warrantied
.......by the way these weren't shipped in a sequencial mode. .just randomly as needed by Dealers....
Some CE's & CT's were pulled off the line or inventory and restamped as designated to that specific assembly line car if an engine. or transmission issue arose.

Re: ce 512 bbc stamping

Personally,
I feel a car with a correct CE. Engine specific for that car is far more valuable than a " numbers matching" transplant (but none born with)
that is prevalent today.

Meaning, a damaged engine was replaced under warranty or over the counter with a New replaced or today an NOS part.

Re: ce 512 bbc stamping

I guess there is more to the CE numbers than I knew. I'm confused how these dates decode. Can you explain? I'm not sure when in November this block was cast but February is a stretch.

Re: ce 512 bbc stamping

For at least Flint and Tonawanda, the CE stamp does not include the month that the block was machined. Following CE, the number denotes the last digit of the model year. Each engine assembly plant was assigned a block of 5-digit serial numbers, which followed the model year digit. When the last number was reached, an additional letter was added after the model year number for a second run, for example CE9A, then that plant's block of serial numbers followed. If a third run was required, it increments to CE9B (for example), and so on.

Tim,
You're info is extremely accurate..... no month in the sequence # following CE or CT .......
The Month & Year are Stamped on the oil pan rail.

One thing I found out, is there are NO PART #'s on these Except a Painted on Code and some various color paint brush strokes applied to the sides of the block.
Pink ,Orange and white denote special high performance for SBC's. I do not know what colors BBC were, but all of the L88's & LS7's I've seen or had , were at least Pink .......
I think, but don't hold me to this.....Green was Low or Standard Performance.

I still have the wooden crate, wired part# / Shipping tag & warehousing pull tag for my '71 built 302 DZ. CE Engine......it's buried in Dads garage "somewhere"

The Chevy Service & Over the Counter Part # & the Chevrolet Special Parts book #'s seen after 1971 do match up to dealer catalog info prior .

Re: ce 512 bbc stamping

Interesting, have seen a few like that with the model year after the extra letter (your CEA1 rather than CE1A).
Do you have any Dealer documentation for your CE assembly?

Re: ce 512 bbc stamping

The crate with part # stenciled on both sides and top.
The pull tag for picking it from inventory.
Part # tag with wire..
No receipt from selling dealer.
