Big Block Exhaust Manifold gaskets

I am in the process of putting my Big Block together and wondered what is acceptable for exhaust manifold gaskets
The Felpro set is ugly so am in the process of trimming them down for individual use.
What is suggested for showing the car, with or without gaskets?

What car?
1970 Chevelle big blocks had no gaskets at all on the exhaust manifolds.

My 67' SS396 Chevelle had no gaskets between the head and manifold ... TAZ

Sorry

1969 L78

I know most did not have them from the factory but always thought once they are removed they would warp and leak

Re: Big Block Exhaust Manifold gaskets

.... So "a thin coat of ultra copper" between the head and the stock exhaust manifold ?

.... Would that be okay for a 1969 427 motor?

.... no gasket at all

Re: Big Block Exhaust Manifold gaskets

no gaskets, I have used the copper before and high temp red as well. Gaskets were in trucks.

Re: Big Block Exhaust Manifold gaskets

If you're a 100% certain the head and manifold surfaces are flat, no gasket will be required. If there is a question if this is true, then what Al said is what you need to do ... use the sealer.

Re: Big Block Exhaust Manifold gaskets

If you have manifolds that are not warped I just use the white paste. Any parts store 3 dollars and a pinch does the trick for each side.

Re: Big Block Exhaust Manifold gaskets

I've always used Ultra Copper on my aluminum headed
drag race engines with no problems or leaks that could be seen.
Although the headers are not cast iron nor the heads it certainly
is a much easier assembly.
