how tall of a slick did they run in prostock?

Hey guys got another wheel/tire question lol. What size slicks would grumpy and them have ran in the late sixties early seventies on the cragars? Also how wide? I was thinking of getting the 29x12x15 m&h for my 15x8 cragars I should be getting soon. Thanks guys!

Thanks,
Vinnie.

Although this isn't his '69, it's a pretty good shot of the rear tires on one of Grumpy's Pro Stock Camaros.

I'm not sure I'd put more than 10" of tread on an 8" wheel, but maybe that's just me.

I believe running a narrower wheel allows you to run a lower pressure that leaves a longer contact patch and still plants the inside of the tire on the track rather than just the edges. Get's a little squirrly at the top end though.

Thanks guys! Verne I love the way that the wider tires buldge out it looks so tough! And I think that's exactly why they did that.

Verne is correct again. Low air pressure is helped by a narrower 4-5" rim to flatten the tire for max bite.
Those guys ran 28-29" tires on the SB cars and 29-30" on the BB cars for 6" slicks.
Your combo Vinnie sounds like a SuperStock set up in the early 70's. Will definetly fill that wheel well up.

These look like 11.5 -12.5 on a 8-9 inch Cragar SS. I doubt they're 10 inches, L 60's are 10". These are outside the fenders with a deep backspace and Raised suspension.
Wrinkle Walls to boot, Later in 68, early 69 His Cars had the "newest version Wrinkle walls" we all came to admire and know. Too bad the rubber & sidewalls on those was so thin they dry rotted faster than the non-wrinkle walls, leaving very few original or NOS tires for us today.
Any body have a set of 7-8 inch x 27-28 inch wrinkle walls ?

Again not his '69, but look at that sweet, sweet wrinkle wall action!

Now that's what I'm talk'n bout

This pic is much later in the life of the '68 Car. (he ran this into '71-'72 if I'm not mistaken in class, match races & the defunct pro drivers league)
Notice the heavily altered wheel wells and vast amounts of sponsor decals.
Another " trick he used on the front eye spring" was to use Nova Spring cups to lower the front spring bolt, hence raising the car.

Re: how tall of a slick did they run in prostock?

Not sure he ran it that late in its life Tom. he ran the 69 car and also the 68 car later on but when the Vega came about he may have sold the car to Heavy by then.

Re: how tall of a slick did they run in prostock?

Start of the 71 season at Pomona was the Vega debut ?
Im pretty sure he match raced the '68 long after the '69 was gone.....he was so dominant with it and his biggest moneymaker till the Vega..
Keystone Raceway Park featured him against Ronnie in ,I think 71-72,,(with the '68) I can't say for sure which year.
I do know at the end of his use , it had been Heavily altered to be lighter before he cut it loose and feasible for M/P ,Gas or AHRA/IHRA......NHRA Did Not like that car for Pro Stock classification any more.
Do you or anyone else know the timeline of transition in detail and or exactly when Heavy or someone else got the '68 ?
Something tells me another Pro Racer got the car.

Sammy is pretty good on that Pro-Stock stuff.

Re: how tall of a slick did they run in prostock?

vega debuted at the '72 winternats
'68 camaro was retired when the '70 camaro was ready
'69 and '70 camaros were run through the rest of the '70-'71 seasons
the '69 camaro was used in nov/dec '71 to test different small block engine combinations for the vega
'69 camaro was sold early in '72, i have a few pictures when the new owners picked it up, the '68 camaro is in one of those pictures.

Re: how tall of a slick did they run in prostock?

I thought 1972 was the last year of the "real" four speeds (pre-Lenco), and therefore the last year of "real" pro stock?

Re: how tall of a slick did they run in prostock?

Good info Dave. I think Heavy ran that 68 car in the 1970,71 time frame.
Where is Dan Palchanes when you need him?
Danny?????
