Rechroming rear bumber
Well, almost a year after "finishing" my car, I put the NOS rear bumper guards on it. They look great.
Bumper is very dull in comparison. Bumper has the slightest of pitting, and may polish up, but it also has one small ding. So, if I want it to look as good as the guards, I will need to replate. Have heard good things about tri city in TN. Is that still a good choice? I am in Oklahoma City. I used a local plater to do the gold cad on my disc brake brackets and silver on the backing plates, and they did a fine job. But... I have never used them for chrome, and don't know anyone else who has. Would like to do this one time, and one time only. Tri city gives a lifetime warranty. Any personal experience? |
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I have had two Firebird and one Charger bumpers done by Tri City over the years. I was very pleased with all of them.
Whatever you do, DONT use Bumperboys. I have only heard bad things about their relating efforts. |
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
Tri-city does a great job for a reasonable price with a lifetime warranty.

I have to be up front, I never gave them a chance to fix the plating issues, because I sold the car, and the new owner said he could live with it. The plating peeled back from an edge on both bumpers. |
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I just got both of mine rechromed by Superior Chrome in Houston. They have been in business a long time and offer a lifetime warranty. Mine look great, Bobby Baker is a great guy and I got free door to door service (his wife is from Rochester). http://www.superiorchrome.com

Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I am looking for the same Lynn. I sent mine to a place in northern ohio. Owner said he thought they could do them for $500 each. The get them and now 800 and a month later. Talked to place in Portland Indiana and he said last nice camaros he did was 550. I have heard ok comments on tri city. After my first experience I would like to drop them off.

Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I would go repop for them. Way to much money for the chroming process and the trip back and forth. I have a real nice repop and really can't tell. It bolts right up to the original brackets with no issues.

Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I wanted to share experiences with bumper boys. My dad has a 57 ford retractable and he got bumpers from them. He had trouble with the rear one cracking. From what I remember they replaced it. Then he had a problem replacement and from what I remember the original warrantee wasn't good on the replacement.
My buddy wanted a 442 bumper and we met them at a swap meet and looked at 3 or 4 and none of them looked good. One had odd look to plating, one had been real bad before they plated it and back looked terrible. Rust fell out of box when we opened it up! |

Sam:
I have become so leary of anything repop. As you know my car has almost no repop stuff. I have aftermarket front seat covers (but I have a VERY NICE set of used ones that will eventually go on) an aftermarket headliner, one lense in the dash, stainless brake and fuel lines, spectre tank, some weather strip (and I hate it) and that is about it. Yeah, I do have some bolt ons, but nothing that can't be reversed. Apparently there are three sources of rear bumpers, Goodmark, AMD and some really cheap overseas crap that most of the vendors sell as "good quality". Normally, AMD stuff isn't bad, but I found one guy whose AMD bumper was reportedly longer on one side than the other. Looks like a good quality repop will be around $180 - 190 shipped. I am fine spending about double that to have my original rechromed. |
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
Just called Tri City, and it is $300 plus whatever the shipping works out to be.
Will post pics when I get it back. |

Did you call Librandi's? |
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I've heard enough good about tri city. Have not received on negative comment. At that price, I don't think I am going to shop around. Seems fair. I'm OK with it. Was actually less than I expected.

Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I had a friend that had bumpers rechromed on a 56 Chevy by Bumper Boys. The car was kept inside for a couple years and the chromed was peeling HEAVILY before the car was even exposed to the weather.

Have you contacted http://www.courtesymetalpolishing.com/ ? |
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
It's amazing the Bumper Boyz are still in business. I can remember reading bad things about them in the mid 90's or earlier on some of the Pontiac websites I was a member of in the 80's and 90's.

Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I have never heard anything good about repops. I used Tri-City, with good results. The company I worked for, had a plant near there, so it was easy for me to stick the bumper in the car when I went to the plant. They would have exchanged my core on the spot, for an already redone one, but I wanted to keep the original one from my car. They charged me $20 extra to keep track of it. In fact, they ground my initials in the back side, while I was there.

Thanks!!!

Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I used Paul's for my outside door handles. Extremely nice work, but cost me about $300, 10-12 years ago.

In the link...between #1 and #2 definitions...upload a picture of bumber. How about that ad between #2 and #3. Do you have these symptoms? What is that telling you about bumber?

Re: Rechroming rear bumber
Lynn,
There is a guy right down 35 in Gainesville. Not Cheap, but Excellent work. Did my chrome and polishing on my concours cars. His polisher has been with him 35 years! I prefer to support local Business, and not ship parts all over the country, to be lost or damaged. Regards, DL |
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
LOVE supporting local businesses DL. We should all try to do that.
|
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I agree Sam. But, Gainesville is a good two hours away from me.
|
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
not close enough to matter Lynn. Metal work is an art and an EPA thing so not many local towns have that service.
|
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
I use IT's Finished here in Charlotte. I have done three cars with these guys and they do great work. I agree about using local businesses. It is hard for these guys to start up once out of business due to the regulations so I try and use them.
I have had a set of Bumper Boyz bumpers which were junk. It bought them when I did not know any better...never again and no repop. There is no comparison to the quality of the original bumpers vs the repops. The repops are so much lighter than originals and the plating generally is not near as good as the platers here in the US. |
Re: Rechroming rear bumber
Another bad response for the boyz..really bad! I have been using tri city with great results. Good cost, reasonable turn around, nice job!. For other items, Donnie introduced me to Libranti's..good job there as well, very satisfied.

Sam, I suspect that's why their business is in the "boonies". It's a quick 1 hour jaunt up from Dallas for me. Well worth it. DL |
