Project COPO cleanup

well, its been about 7 years since I finished the resto on my COPO Chevelle. Since it has been finished I have never been happy with the canshaft in the mnotor..ts a little big..sounds mean, but does'nt run worth a crap!....so I had Chris Straub grind me a up custom solid roller more along the lines of a stock cam rather than the "racey "cam that was in it. I suppose I could change the cam with the motor in the car, but I think I will pull the motor so I can clean and repaint some stuff, replace the repro exhaust manifolds that were temporary ( 6 years ago) as one of the originals had broken while assembly was going on...repaint the motor as it is peeling and showing some small leak/seepage around the gaskets. Here are some pics of the first day..more to follow:

A little refreshing on an already perfect car.

This will keep it tip top, you see some cars ending up showing their age, not this old girl.

Dan/ryan..I primed it the first time..it was in pretty good shape over all..maybe less than 5% was looking shabby/peeling a little..so I will primer it again for sure.!

That's me lifting the motor out with one hand. We just hooked up the hoist for a back-up.

Re: Project COPO cleanup

If you use an automotive grade DTM primer and topcoat with a automotive enamel it will last a long time. Use a spray gun instead of the cheap rattle cans.

302moz 01-12-2014 08:50 PM

Re: Project COPO cleanup

The best primer to use is SPI brand epoxy primer reduced with alittle thinner . We get everything prepped and spray a couple of thin coats ,let it set a few hours then top coat. Spray it thin so the grain of the cast still shows. Blocks never had a lot of paint from the plant. Also use light grey orange covers better.Epoxy goes down first on all bare metal surfaces that we do. Even under all filler.

cheveslakr 01-12-2014 09:20 PM

Re: Project COPO cleanup

X2 on the SPI, red oxide, and use a good SS urethane orange flattened to 70%. Love your fathom green car!!

Cool! Another tool I can borrow...What stops the valve from dropping, when the head is still bolted down? Air in the plug hole?

Forget that question/I just noticed the air hose.

Re: Project COPO cleanup

I have that same spring tool. It's the best way to go if you're not pulling the heads.

jannes_z-28 01-18-2014 07:47 AM

Re: Project COPO cleanup

Had that when working on our racecar. It needed spring replacement every other run.

Works great until someone pull the air hose for you...
