'70 SS Chevelle

Hi guys.
I landed this '70 SS last week. It came from Washington. It has bench seat/column shift, cowl hood minus induction. Has had a repaint and a clean up underneath but apart from that is a really solid, original, nice driving car. I plan to keep it until my 69 Chevelle arrives and then it will be up for sale.
Thanks.

Blue Cloth Bench, Nice! Does this Chevelle have a build sheet, is so.....perhaps it was a non stripe car and someone added the stripes

No build sheet Dan, unfortunately. According to the trim tag and behind the door trims, the car was originally Astro Blue with what I have been told was a white vinyl top. Trim tag says 25 A. As you say it could have been a non stripe car which would be a shame as when they repainted the car, in a different shade of blue, they also painted the stripes incorrectly! A shame to do that to what is otherwise a really nice, driver quality Chevelle.

Nice 70 Damien. My Chevelle is an orig Astro blue car, but repainted resale-red in the 90s. I thought you raced altereds?

Up until I bought this dragster a couple of years ago, I had never sat in anything other than an altered. So needless to say that I have copped some stick about having a sex change, given I bought a "girls car"!
Throw up a pic of your Chevelle, would love to see it.

Re: '70 SS Chevelle

Well a lot has happened in the last year or so since last visiting this thread to say the least!
I ended up selling the '69 and keeping the '70. I would still like another '69 sometime in the future but unfortunately the silver '69 I had was not the car for me. After a little garage incident, I decided to have the stripes fixed on the '70 and as often happens I ended up repainting the car in it's original Astro Blue at the same time. Very happy with the results and it's nice to look at the car with correct stripes for a change. It actually looks darker than it is due to my crappy phone pics, so apologies for that. I am still waiting for the seat material from our friends at SMS and are now being told it should be ready to ship in May, 7 months after placing the order . We have a big show coming up in May over here that I was luck enough to be invited to so we are looking forward to that.
Hope everyone has a great Easter.

Re: '70 SS Chevelle

A couple of pics on what has been a pretty quiet time for the Chevelle. It's been a little like the red headed step child of late as we have using our Nova a bit. But it is now time for that to move on and we have it up for sale. It's been a great car but it needs to go. We are planning on attending next years MCACN as well as a visit to Pavilions in Phoenix so I need to turn over a couple of cars in the meantime. Given summer is upon us here I thought I might pull the Chevelle out of hibernation and look at a couple of the things that need attention. Hasn't really seen the light of day since the Gasolene show in Melbourne in June.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...psca8db059.jpg

It's has issues with the fuel gauge since day 1 of my ownership, so I am working thru that at the moment by the process of elimination. I pulled the tank out on the weekend, although the sender tested ok with the tank in the car, just to make sure there was nothing funky going on under there. No build sheet under there unfortunately! One of the things I love about this car is that it is in such nice shape. It has all of its factory sheet metal and save for a couple of small rust repairs in the bottom of each fender about the size of a quarter, no other rust or collision damage. It's just a shame that when someone before me decided to repaint the car the incorrect colour on top, they also painted the underside, firewall and radiator support in full gloss black. A large job to put back to factory semi gloss but hopefully that will happen one day. Not really loving the yellow springs and shocks either but that will be easily fixed in the future.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...pse1989796.jpg

I will finally have the interior material in about a week from our friends at SMS. It has taken almost a year but hopefully when it arrives it is correct, as per the samples they provided and I can get the seats to the trimmer. I will also have a correct booster, prop valve and master from Steve at Brake Boosters shortly as well and can get to installing that as well as some other hoses and lines to clean up the engine bay. Steve was great to deal with and the quality of his parts look first rate.

Re: '70 SS Chevelle

Couple of updates as I have received some parts from the US in the last week or so. I have also had the carb rebuilt by a local guy. The plan is to give the engine a bit of a service in the next couple of weeks with new plugs, leads, oil and filters then take it back to him for a tune.
My reconditioned booster and prop valve turned up today from Steve Gregori @ Brake Boosters and I couldn't be more pleased with them both. He's certainly turns out first class work. Highly recommended. I plan on fitting them along with the correct '70 style master and new brakes lines, over the xmas break.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...ps59736b3d.jpg

Last week after more than a 12 month wait, my interior fabric and vinyl arrived from SMS. The only recommendation for these clowns I could offer is that they are the company that reproduces the 762 fabric closest to the original. Other than that, they are a disaster to deal with. Hopefully some of the other companies can step up and accurately make some of the harder to find stuff so the next guy can avoid these people altogether. Anyways, the seat are booked in with the trimmer for early January.

Re: '70 SS Chevelle

I spent a couple of days last week doing some engine bay clean up that was long overdue. I started with a good pressure wash of the bay and front end to rid it of some nasties from the repaint and also the build up of a few years of driving, both here and in Washington state, where the car came from. Made a pretty decent difference. I then pulled the exhaust manifolds, blasted them with the new cabinet I bought, painted them with cast iron VHT paint, replaced the donuts and refitted. I also pulled the power steering lines and replaced them with new pieces and bled the system. Pretty straight forward process.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...psb17fa298.jpg
I now have myself a new helper too!

One blasted, one to go.

Manifolds painted and back in place, lines replaced.

Good help, hard to find!

This week I'm moving on to the new booster and master set up I have from Brake Boosters.

Re: '70 SS Chevelle

A little more progress this week as I swapped out the the crappy booster and master for the nice Brake Boosters booster, prop valve and an almost as crappy, but era correct, repro master as well as some new brakes lines. As reported in the tech section, I had a couple of issues with the depth of the piston hole in the master and had to shorten the booster/master pin some to make it work. And work it does, I now have better brakes than ever, so a very worthwhile exercise. Over the next week or so I will give it a service with plugs, oil, filters and replace those ugly blue plug wires and then it's off for a dyne tune. Now just waiting on the trimmer to recover the seats. Hopefully in the next week or two that will happen.

Your master cylinder bail clip is backwards and could allow the brake fluid to weep out if not flipped over to the other side.
