Shelby Research and Questions for the Pros
 

Folks, I have a line on (purportedly) the only 1969 Shelby Barrier Test &amp; Prototype Pilot car remaining of the 3 produced. It's complete, but in <span style="font-weight: bold">very </span>rough shape. The seller is asking quite a hefty price ($200k+). What I'd like to know are your opinions on what it would take ($) to restore this car perfectly (needs ground up, everything) and what your thoughts are on how much it would be worth once complete?

I'm not entirely familiar with the value of all Shelbys even though I watch them and have owned a few. Count on at least $150,000 in restoration cost plus the cost of the car. That puts you at $350,000 and that's way too much money in this car in my opinion.

Wow. A 69 Shelby is about 100K these days and he is asking double what they are selling for. Unless there is some outstanding aspect of the car other than Pilot- crash car, I can't see more than a 20% bump in value over a regular one. Or maybe I'm too far removed from them to even have a opinion. Any pics ?

1st I've heard of ANY &quot;crash test&quot; car being marketed

looks like the years have not been kind to the shell either

it appears that EVERYTHING is missing out of the interior and drivetrain

I can't imagine it being worth anything over $10-20 k (assuming it has a title) for this scrap heap escapee ...

A bit harsh but she is certainly in some pain! Definitely not worth $280k........perhaps not even restored.

69/70 shelbys have a 48 before the engine designation (5th digit) which for regular production are M-351 GT350 and R-428 GT500. This Q code car has a vin that falls in line with a few prototypes in fact the next sequential number from this car is Q code prototype. One of the press cars was actually an S code car. This particular car is not known to the registry as of the last printing. Looks to be the real deal

4 and 8 are actually the 6th and 7th digits of Shelby VINs.

Correct my error. Basic point is still in tact. The car has a 428 non ram vin and is a real deal Shelby prototype. Not so sure it is worth more than a regular production Shelby perhaps to some. Others would prefer an example with a known Shelby vin

I would agree on the $150k restoration costs. Some Ford and Shelby parts especially NOS are VERY expensive.

Agreed. I've been doing a lot of research and for one, he has the Marti stating it was 1 of 3 prototypes; the parts are unbelievably expensive (NOS); $280k is far and away too much for the shape its in -- we'd be approaching $500k easily when combined with resto costs; I did find another &quot;purported&quot; 69 Shelby Prototype on another Shelby forum, located in Australia, and converted to right-hand drive &lt;Link&gt;; '69 Shelby Proto ; All in all, I just don't think the payback is there..........although, it'd be a very cool car to own!
