A&A Grump Lump Scoop
Brent396:
Part # 15633, 7" tall, 14" wide at the front near the base and 33" long from the front lower base to the rear part of the scoop that sticks out the furthest +/- 1/4"-it was hard to get an exact measurement unless I dropped a plumb bob . I think A&A measured from outer flange to flange on the width i.e. 16 1/2" wide and 34 1/2" long that took in consideration the front flange Scoop has the small oval shaped A&A decal underneath(covered in paint) http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...S/IMG_2286.jpg http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...S/IMG_2291.jpg http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...S/IMG_2285.jpg http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...S/IMG_2296.jpg http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...S/IMG_2289.jpg |

One of my clients was a fiberglasser back in the 70's. Made anything from dune buggies for Meyers(still has the molds), boats, fiberglass for appliances, display cabinets for retail and industrial applications etc. He said he would make a mold from mine and make copies but I hate to remove mine from the hood. I was hoping to find another and hang the painted up for display. My scoop also needs some work before a mold is made from it. The scoop has drooped on top maybe 1/4" from age and on one side it has sucked in slightly. |

Jim </div></div> Jim I remember that scoop now. That was a Manufacturers Associate/ Fastglass /Legendary Fiberglass out of Warrington PA. Rare scoop. That is the exact scoop Joel Rosen used on at least 3 cars as Joel bought his fiberglass from that company. That grump lump style scoop has a peculiar shape to it so it was easy to identify. When I bought my Vega hood from Joel it came from Legendary and when talking with Larry the owner he mentioned he did a lot of Joels fiberglass since the very early 70's. Sadly all the old molds are gone from repeated moves/buyouts. Larry told me he remembers taking a lot of molds to a landfill in the 80's or cutting them up and putting themin the trash because no on wanted those old fashioned scoops anymore and he got tired of stepping over them. Joel put that scoop you have on a 396 tunnel rammed 69 Chevelle and a early 70's sb Nova that i recall right off the bat but I remember it on a 69 Motion camaro. |
Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
Spoke with Larry plenty of times. He could be a bit slippery at times, but I liked the guy. He sold the busines to a fellow who goes by Fiber Concepts, but I'm not sure how long they'll be around. Lots of old stuff gone, unfortunately Larry is too.
All the locations they were at were right around where I grew up and live. Would be cool to have some local product. Not A&A, but still cool to me. Fastglas had the coolest literature. When I get home, I'll dig some out. Pretty sure tbhey spelled it with 1 S at the end. |

15643 appears to be the plastic bolt on version. Mine was #15633 which is the fiberglass bond on version. |

Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
Tommy
The middle A&A decal is what is under my scoop but it is covered in metalflake paint but I flicked off enough to see the colors. A&A applied a coat of clear gelcoat over the decal. Moroso did the same thing but used their business card. My scoop was bought in September of 1974 not sure when it was made. |
Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
The red PHR cover car had the oval shaped A&A decal in the vent window (you pointed that out to me a few years ago) so when I found my decal and then ended up with the hood I have I couldn't help but use my decal in the same location as the red Nova did. That red Nova is the poster child for Day 2.....

Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
Looks cool man. Is there a logo on it?
Might seem wrong, but I'd have to cut a hole in the front of it so it would perform right. Are you going to use it? http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...NovaMGrove.jpg http://www.quartermilestones.com/pho...n2/RMA6902.jpg |
Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
Paul There is no logo on it you can tell where there was one at one time.Iam thinking about using it when i restore my 68 L79 nova.It has more of a rounded look. The A A is more square and bigger . Mine looks short like the pics you posted and the back has the same slant as the one on Grumpys Toy Thanks Brent

Brent, it appears your scoop was probabaly made in the Fastlgas era based upon PXTX photo-same outer lip/flange, white glossy gelcoat over black. I have a photo from an old fastglas ad and your scoop is without a doubt made from that company. Couple of identifiers: The ridge on the top of the scoop on the rear that goes from side to side is curved towards the front and the front wall of the scoop is also curved outwards pointing forward. I have never seen another scoop from any company that has your features. |
Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
What time area you think post the add pic if you have it

Manufacturers Associates was late 60's to early 70's... always had real small 2" x 2' ads in the back of mags Fastglas was approx 1973-early 80's or possibly later-I bought a Vega hood from Motion in 1991 or so and it was drop shipped from Legendary.Advertised a lot in the NY based publications Hi-performance Cars and Super Stock & Drag Illustrated out of VA. Not sure what the company was called in the 1980's... maybe not even open?? I have a 1987 speed equipment manufacturers book and literally every fiberglass manufacturer is in there but nothing with FG or Legendary and nothing at that address. |

Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
Looks like Speedway Motors has Grump Lumps available. I'm not an expert, but they look pretty close to me. They even have two sizes.

I've never had a real one in my hand, or these so I can't tell you much about the difference.

Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
If I don't make a copy of my A&A scoop I will probably end up buying the Speedway scoop but can't live with the 20" wide width. My A&A is 14" wide at the base.
I called Speedway and the the guy measured the scoop and he confirmed it's 20" wide. I will take out the 6" out of the scoop lengthwise and reglass is back together. |
Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
Yeah, 20" is pretty doggone wide, even if you have your carbs mounted sideways.

Re: A&A Grump Lump Scoop
Here is another version of the A&A sticker. early 70's
