HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
Congrats to our very own Sam Griffith (1970 Hemi Cuda) vs. John Hill (1970 LS6 Chevelle)
Great Article, Great Owners and Great Cars! My money is on the LS6 even if it sports a 3:31 rear vs. the Cuda`s 4:10 Love the Black with Red guts on the Chevelle Dan |
Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
O' Dan,

Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
So someone finally figured out the surprise that I alluded to from the Pavillions post last week?

It was cool to see the magazine way before it came out!
GREAT job Sam John Hill and Jeff Koch! Sam, take a picture of the picture that John had made for you... |
Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
I was glad to see the article written in the style that it was. I had visions of that old article in some Muscle Car magazine about 'Hemi vs. Buick GS' which created controversy and heated debates the likes of which are usually reserved for politics.
Congrats to both Sam and John on the fine coverage. |
Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
Ha! Funny you should mention Buick GS, Bill. Jeff Koch said that the mag has already received comments from upset readers that said "where's the 3 way comparison with the Buick?"
Can't please all the people....... BTW, John's wife, Angie, caught these action shots of the cars ! |
Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
Drop the air pressure down to 14 on the tires on the deuce, come out of the hole at about 4 grand and go kick both their a$$es.

Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
I just got this issue and it was a fine one indeed. That LS6 is one of the nicest combos I have ever seen too. Gorgeous car..

Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
I enjoyed the article the other day when I read it. Its hard for me to not give a slight edge to a hemi vs an LS6. Even if they drive the same, the freight train sound and feel of that engine is unforgettable if you drive one. No doubt the chevelle is the better built car by far (full frame), it does have to cary that heavy frame around with it where ever it goes though. Black with red interior chevelle is such a cool color combo.
What blew my mind was the 4:10 with the auto on the cuda. Isn't that pretty low for an auto? Hemi engines back then used to suck the pan dry (from people I have talked to and raced hemi cars, you had to do things inside the block to get the oil to drain quickly back down to the pan or else..) if you kept the rpms pegged for a long time, so that rear gear ratio caught my eye. Both cars looked great and were great to read about. |
Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
It was indeed another great article in HMM. I don't think it gets much better than a black, red gut LS6. Without question, the nicest color combination ever. However, truth be known, I would have a REALLY hard time picking between those two cars if someone offered either of them to me. You just cannot beat the looks a the Hemi Cuda. Nice job by both guys! Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
Dave House (ngtflyr) and I own the 'cuda together. We had both wanted to own one forever and splitting it halfsies made it (more) affordable. We picked it up 5 years ago in a trade with Bill Weimann. As for the 4.10 gears in an auto Hemi, you had to seek it out cause the regular gears and rear on a Hemi auto was an 8 and 3/4 axle with 3.54 gears (maybe 3.23?). Original owner wanted the bulletproof Dana 60 with 4.10 gears and paid for it - not cheap. Don't know of the oil return issues, but suspect Chrysler engineers wouldn't put a 4.10 behind their hemi autos without some severe duty testing.

Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
I'm gas & brakes and Dave steers.

Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
Just beautiful shots! My '70 hemi Challenger is also auto with the 4.10 Dana from the factory. Still has original engine and rear after all these years - and a lot of quarter miles. RIP for the original trans though - one too many burn outs! Those tires aren't putting much stress on that Challenger's drive train.

Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
those are great pictures. It really shows how much lower the cuda is than the chevelle, way more than I thought until you look at the headon shots. The cuda looks like a low rider next to the chevelle Fog lights on the cuda are below the level of the license plate frame on the chevelle...

Re: HMM`s May 2011 Issue - LS6 vs Hemi
----Rich,,,Im almost sure that Bob Hamilton told me when asked that he was never beaten by a 70 Hemi-Cuda in D/SA. And there were a bunch of those pesky Hemis in D/SA between 1970 and 72.
----My first year with "Red" (1990) was mostly a getting used to it year, and one weekend I went to a nostalgia meet at a strip down in Darlington. My main competition was a 70 Hemi-Cuda that had also held the world record for a time in D/SA. A really great guy from West Virginia named Donnie brought it along with a couple of other Mopars. We raced 3 times that weekend and I beat Donnie all 3 times, two out of three on the big end, as my reaction times were abysmal. Donnie could not believe that Red Alert beat him on the big end. He claimed that no LS6 could come from behind and walk a Cuda out the back door. That was with my first "baby" motor (roughly 650hp). Actually, Im not sure what this has to do with the two subject cars but I do love telling the story...........Bill S |
