70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
I have been thinking about it for a while. With one of the kids getting close to college age (16 year old daughter), and the fact I haven’t been driving it in a year or so, and that I have this ongoing, unfulfilled lust for a 73 Super Duty, I have chosen to let her go (the car, not the daughter).
I probably don’t have to tell too many of you long time followers anything about the car you don’t already know after following its haunted thread: https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...7973#Post77973 and the Hemmings article: http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/..._feature1.html But in case you are looking for the only one of its kind, here are the highlights: -One of 10 Hemi R/T-SE Charger 4-speeds produced, (10 four speeds, 6 autos, total) -The only red Hemi R/T-SE produced -17,000 miles (same owner for past 24 years, I bought it with 12,234 miles) -Unrestored. Repainted twice by me: in 1987 and 2004. Original leather interior, original undercoated belly. -I am the second owner to drive it after the original owner, here in NJ. The car was off the road from 1975 to 1987. Owners 2 and 3 before me never got it running. -Complete provenance since October 1969, documented. All three prior owners (all in NJ) interviewed and reunited with the car. All of them confirmed the car’s mileage, provenance and history. -It has the entire dealer file that documents the original owner’s buying experience from inspiration in October 1969, to consummation, on to conception, and through delivery on Jan 3, 1970. More documents than the car is long, literally -Dealer installed tubular headers from 1970 “Hustle Stuff”catalog, installed prior to delivery as documented by original dealer paperwork. -Fastest stock hemi car I have ever owned: 12.77 @111 mph on street tires, (original owner got a 11.70 out of it when he raced it at Englishtown in the early 1970’s) -Hemmings Muscle Machines called it “The Most Documented Hemi Car in Existence” -Probably the most well-known Hemi Charger there is. Featured in over a dozen magazines and reference books over the past 24 years. There was even a scale model replica made of it a couple years ago - the entire production run completely sold out in a week! (one still in the box, goes with the car, if you want it) She is the only one of her kind in the universe. She’s mean, nasty and will scare the hell out of you. Feel free to PM me or email any questions to me at Thank you, Steve http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Charger_2a.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...0HEMIbook1.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../hemmings1.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ngnotice11.jpg |

Here's a sampling of some of the original paperwork that this car has:
The original dealer file: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...hargfolder.jpg The legal pad sheet with the original negotiation for price, including the set of headers: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ibblesheet.jpg How about the original bill of lading from the delivering tractor trailer on New Year's Eve, 1969: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/8convoya.jpg The dealer prep work order, documenting the installation of the headers prior to delivery: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...alerprep1a.jpg Lots more in the file. Thanks for the referral! I haven't driven the Charger more than 25 miles in over a year and a half, other than to top off the tank. I've been spending all the spare time with the Pontiacs (and the family)! So, I figured it's probably time - better that someone enjoys driving this monster than seeing it hibernate (like my old 93 Viper race car that's been up on jackstands for 12 years now - but that's another story). |
Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
For you toy collectors out there (of both 1:1 scale and 1:18 scale), here is the model that Supercar1.com made of my Charger a couple years ago. It came as a total surprise at the time, when someone emailed me a link on my birthday alerting me, so I bought the last few they still had.

Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
Steve are you really sure you want to sell this baby
As I am knocking at the door going on 60 there are a few cars I really regret selling Back then it was about the money today its memories of what I once had My first car was a copy of miss belvedere same color had a 413 in that one Had a lot of cars in my time but the two I let go I wish I had today One would be the 57 Plymouth and the other one would be my 1959 chevy El Camino with a 409 In all these year and all the car shows I have been I Never have seen a 57 Plymouth Or a 59 El There has NOT been a day were I wish I had keep those two cars. They were cheep back then but today well lets just say the money is just not in my Budget as I am on SSI They were a LOT of fun back then . I just wish before My time is up to get one more Time to have some fun Norm |
Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
Hi Norm, How are you doing?
As for regrets, I'll go with what Sinatra said: "Regrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention." I have a list of regretfully sold cars from over the years, ranging from the 71 hemicuda ragtop, to a pair of 71 six-barrel cuda ragtops, to the 71 hemicharger sunroof car, etc, but most of them I regret because I sold them long before they became valuable. (Which isn't a proper basis for a legitimate regret to be based upon, anyway). So yes, Norm, I will regret selling this car if it does sell, since it has been part of the family for a quarter century, long before I had a wife, or kids, but if the funds go toward something important, like the kid(s) education, it's worth it. The daughter wants to be an engineer, so if I can help her accomplish that goal, it's fine by me. Anyway she likes her great-grandmother's 75 Firebird better anyway, since that's the first car she ever drove. ...and I wouldn't trust the Charger to my boy. If you've seen him "drive" a lawnmower, you'd agree. It's more like watching a full scale version of pinball, the way he manages to crash into every tree on the property. The John Deere store has an running tab at the parts counter for all the things he's broken, so far this year. |
Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
Hi Steve I know what you mean Kids today think it’s a game watching too MUCH to fast and furious (Ha Ha)
A car like that charger you have to respect It is so fast that you have to know when NOT to get in to it and the street is NO playground for that baby I am doing ok some days better some not as good 12 years living with pain every day is no picnic .I just try to ignore it but some times it just wins The thing that gets me is I had a lot of really nice cars back in the 60s &70s Back then I could afford them/ they were cheep BUT today a lot of the are just out of reach And I am getting to old and I am to banged up to find a fixer upper as they say and rebuild I did my share of building cars Any way good luck withy your Charger hope it finds a good home BY the way I did have a 68 charger R/T 440 sky blue white interior and the only Hemi I had was a 57 Chrysler 300 with a 392 Hemi (ANOTHER ONE I KICK MYSELF FOR EVER SELLING) That was one big car and fast to boot Norm |
Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
Here's a quick video you can click on, of the Hemi starting up and idling. That is actually the stock-specification, Mopar Performance Hemi cam in there. Those headers really wake that engine up.

Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
Steve, I will never forget the moment I found the file for your car. As soon as I saw "Charger R/T" and "Wickberg" on the jacket, I knew it was for your car. I brought the folder home that day and showed my dad, the first thing he said was, you need to track the owner down and give him all this stuff. Then he called my uncle (who also worked at Suburban in 1970) and they told stories for hours about your car and all the other hot Dodge's they sold there.
Good luck with the sale (altho you know I feel connected to the car, and would hate to loose track of it). The fact that Dad prepped it and did other work on it, Suburban was my family dealership and Steve Martin (no...not that one)is a friend too. Not to mention every time I see it and touch it I get a warm feeling, John |
Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
John, you and your Dad are truly what is "right" about this hobby.
So many people in this day and age, would have literally held something like that original dealer material, for ransom. Through your detective work, the car went from having no documentation other than gossip and a broadcast sheet, to the mother lode of paperwork. And I do remember that day, back in 1990 when I was working for Musclecar Review, when you tracked me down and mailed me the entire package, out of the blue. That was right after the car was in the November, 1990 issue. http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/t...DayTwoP1-1.jpg http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/t...DayTwop2-1.jpg And you know what is really scary? The storyline I used for that article was just a fantasy of what I thought it must have been like to buy that car back in 1970. It's bizzare how close I was to the real, actual story that I later learned from you and your Dad. Cue the Twilight Zone theme...again! And now that I think of it, I should have trademarked the term "DAY TWO," since as far as I can recall, that was the first time the term appeared in print. And I got all sorts of grief for using it as the title since the magazine powers-that-be didn't think anyone would understand what I meant. |
Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
Here's how she looks with its 1970 set of 15x4 and 15x7 Cragars that were installed by the original owner back in January, 1970. Of course, they go with the car. Those 1972 Firestone Parnelli Jones L60x15 tires are as hard as hockey pucks now.

nice car

Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
Now that is the quintessential Musclecar, a gross polluter and massive consumer of the Earth's limited fossil fuels. Could you imagine picking the kids up from school at Parent Pick-Up and seeing this macho Red Hemi Charger parked among a line of Toyota Prius'es? You'd definitely be the "cool dad" at school!

Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
In case anyone is interested and wants to see her in person, the Charger will be at the 2011 MCACN in Chicago in November in the non-judged SYC display.
And yes, she will be riding on her 41 year old Cragars and vintage rubber. Everything on the car will be as delivered in Day 2 condition on 01/03/1970. Stay tuned. |

Be afraid...be very afraid. I have all of my dad's original 70's bellbottoms in the attic. The purple corduroy bellbottoms are my favorite. Combine that with the Frye boots, Foster Grant sunglasses, Polyester shirt, and macrame belt and we are ready to get down.

Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
All of you Day 2 zealots ought to wear the "appropriate attire" to the show. After all, if its good enough for your car to wear.....plus I'm sure your wife or tailor can let out the inseam a little. Sock it to 'em, baby.

Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
I used to but I got yelled at by Pudums to dress normal cause she was sick of getting yelled at by people for letting me out in public dressed that way...

Re: 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made
I think there should be a judged class for vintage Day-2 dressed participants.
Sadly, I would only end up looking like a 1970's used car salesman. http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/t...r_salesman.jpg |
