Mecum thoughts....
Anyone have any thoughts after watching or being at the Indy auction?
While I'm aware it's super rare, I'm not sure passing up $1.1 mil for the '69 Trans AM 'vert was a good idea. (??) Was pretty surprised to see an LS6 only bid up to $70K and and a GT500 Shelby sold for $68K. Prices seemed down on Camaros. |
Re: Mecum thoughts....
Best Musclecar auction there has been. 1.1 mil should have bought the TA vert but there probably wasn't real money on it.

Re: Mecum thoughts....
I recorded the 69 T/A ragtop auction portion and I could not believe that they focused on Dana Mecum as he said "I was protecting it for you so we bid it to 1 million. No real bidder" or something to that effect. I can rerun the tape in case anyone wants to know the exact wording. Shocking to say the least.

Steve, you know, now that I think of it, I do remember hearing that. I also think I heard something similar at a few other points in the auction as well. While I knew this happened, I too was surprised actually hearing it out loud on the air.

Re: Mecum thoughts....
I saw and heard Dana say it too. Even my wife picked up on it..
I will have to go back and watch it again to see what his exact words were. Lots of nice cars, that my TV take anyway. |
Re: Mecum thoughts....
I still want to know who bought that bank repossesed Florentine Red 73 SD455 Formula. That seems to have been the bargain of the event at $61,000. The Formula SD's don't seem to have as high a value with collectors as the more famous and flashy T/A's, even though the Formulas were much rarer and were available in any color, not just white, green or red.

Re: Mecum thoughts....
Anyone knows what the 69 T/A coupes got?

I know one went real low. I want to say the 40's.

He also had a 68 L 88 coupe that sold for 150 which was an absolute gift. I bid 145 on it but stopped due to the owner saying someone stole his tank sheet! It turned out that someone gave it to an associate of Mecum but never told the owner. The owner looked really pissed after his cars sold.

Re: Mecum thoughts....
Both the SD and L88 seem amazingly bought if no foolishness involved..
Anyone else looking at the memorabilia sold?. Those Neon Firestone signs especially make me weak in the knees... http://www.mecum.com/auctions/consig...ay=Memorabilia ~ Pete |
Re: Mecum thoughts....
Interesting auction…many well-bought cars at bargain prices. The Pontiacs’ seemed to take a big hit with the current economic conditions. Not sure if the division being phased out had some bearing on everyone selling their Ponchos? The 1969 TA ragtop had NO real bidders. The beautiful Orbit Orange 1970 Judge convertible restored by Level One topped out at 150K. Another stunning silver 1970 Judge ragtop sold for what I believe was around 110K. This particular car sold for double a couple years back. Many 1969 TAs had trouble climbing in price. The Swiss-cheese Catalina’s did well as always. Also the Oldsmobiles’ did surprisingly well with two coupes selling for around 100K and a trac-pack recreation going for 110K. Some Corvettes were absolute bargains!! All in all it was a fun auction with plenty to see and do!

One correction I misspoke …the 421 Super Duty Tempests did well as always. The hemi Challenger ragtop did well but was clearly down in price. My favorite of the auction was the Harley Earl Vette!! It sure felt good to get away from work! RM

Re: Mecum thoughts....
Saw the below linked ad for the resto'd '70 Z28 coming up at Mecum's St. Paul and wondered why the Copo 9796 rear spoiler isn't mentioned...unless added later?.
Also, somebody should set Dana's people up w/ a spell checker...sad when the word you muff up is meticulously?. http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail...0610_061010_S58 ~ Pete |
