Flat Bottom Cowl Induction air cleaner differences

I've had a few or these original flat bottomed air cleaners and have come up with some observations on them. How can you tell the difference in the bottoms when they are not with the car they came on? Here's part of the solution. This first picture is of a a-c from a 427 Yenko Camaro.

All of the black air cleaners I pictured I know exact what they came off of. The first two pictures were definitely off of a 1969 Yenko Camaro with a 427. The next two pictures are of air cleaners off of two different 69 SS 350 Camaros. The last two pictures of the silver a-c were on e-bay and I have no info to prove what they were off of, but by the shape of the vent tube, I'm gonna bet they may have come off of a 396/427 car or off of a Z-28, but not off of a 350 car. The 350 a-c's shows the vent tubes having a full 90 degree bend. The black 427 a-c shows it having less than a 90 degree bend. I don't have an original flat bottom Z28 air cleaner in hand to look at, but if you do, maybe you can draw some more conclusions from it by checking the shape of the vent tube too. I just wanted to share my pictures because this is one of the reasons I frequent this site. I've learned a lot from everyone on here and wanted to share a little knowledge.

Are both vent tubes the same diameter?

Same diameter on all of the vent tubes. I've had all of the black air cleaners in my hands along with all the hardware that went on top of the 350 air cleaners too.

Is the distance from the bottom surface to the carb mounting surface the same on both?

I only have the last black 350 air cleaner bottom in hand to measure. I put a straight edge across the bottom and oriented it from front to back with the base turned upside down. At the front notch area (where it locks to the carb) it measures 1 13/16, and at the rear it measures 1 11/16. Someone else may have others to measure, but I sold the other 350 and the 427.

Thanks for posting on flat bottom air cleaners. I own a 69 RS/SS 350 camaro that originally was ordered with a cowl hood from the factory (on window sticker) and was curious if this is the origianal air cleaner as it had an extension ring on the top. Assuming because this motor had a cast iron intake with a Q-jet carb and extension is to put the gasket up closer to the hood? Does this air cleaner appear like the correct item for the car? Label is faded on it. I am third owner and basically almost all original components on this car. Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Looks awful original to me. Does yours have a full 90 degree bend on the vent tube also? Sure looks like it. That extention ring looks about right too. If you look closely and use a magnifying glass, you may find a tiny DEMCO stamp surounded by an oval on the ring if the paint isn't too heavy. Demco is the company that supplied them to Chevrolet. Not all of them have that stamp so don't sweat it if yours doesn't have it. Also the original flat ring that held the rubber seal used on 69 Camaros was slightly oval shaped and did not have a flat side like the later one used on 70 and up Chevelles.

Jeff, as long as we're discussing air cleaners and things, what is the diameter of yours where it attaches to the rubber hose, 3/4 or 1 inch?

Re: Flat Bottom Cowl Induction air cleaner differences

the extension ring brought the rubber seal up to the cowl hood. the ss 350 didnt use a hi rise intake like the z-28 or big block. yes it is correct.

Looked at hose end tonight and measured it to be 1" OD. Also found the small Demco with a circle around it on the top ring. Makes me wonder how many small block 350 SS cars had factory cowl hoods. Thanks John and everyone for the help!!!
