HEI with stock size dist. cap ?
I switched the motor from my 65 Chevelle to the 69 Nova. I had an HEI dist (mid 80's style)on the motor and there is no clearance for this in the Nova. Is there something smaller I can use or do I have to go back the points distributor?
Thanks in advance for your help. |
Re: HEI with stock size dist. cap ?
If you have to go back to points distributor due to size constraints but don't want the points - you can install an electronic conversion kit from somewhere like Lectric Limited. All fits under stock cap, no other wires protruding, etc. Not the cheapest solution maybe but.....

You will have to get new wires,or MSD small cap for HEI wires is the best.

Re: HEI with stock size dist. cap ?
I have the Pertronix II in my stock distributor and it has been great. Another option is Dave's small body hei conversion in your stock distributor. I have not used him, but others seem to like his stuff.

Re: HEI with stock size dist. cap ?
I got a Dave's unit, and I like it because the components are available at any auto parts store. He does have to machine the underside of the body to square it, so don't use a "special" core. I bought one for $5 and sent it to him for modification.

Re: HEI with stock size dist. cap ?
You can make a small body hei using either an MSD (if you want billet) or Chrysler (if you want widely available & in stock at parts stores) reluctor, and then a magnetic pickup (MSD is best bet)...it sounds a lot harder than it actually is. The only machining needed is to knock down the lobes on the shaft so the reluctor will fit over it...then, just hide your MSD box and your golden.

I use the Crane Fireball in a regular Chevy points distributor and it works fine. Adjustable rev-limiter...never had a problem.

I've used a Mallory Unilite unit for ~ 8 years and have never had a problem. Not the cheapest, but it has been trouble free - knock on wood!

Re: HEI with stock size dist. cap ?
MSD makes a nice HEI distributor that you can install an original Delco old points style cap on and it looks almost like stock with the exception of the billet finish on the shaft...

Re: HEI with stock size dist. cap ?
Some good ideas listed here and some not so. I think the best deal going would be the new Pertronix III and matching Flamethrower III. The unit fits inside an older style small points distributor and has an adjustable rev-limiter and multi-spark function. It eliminates points and it's also like having an MSD box inside your distributor! Then you can also buy the MSD small cap that has the HEI-type terminals on top so you wouldn't need to change your plug wires.
