112 in the shade

With over a year of time and money invested in my Z28 project I think I picked the wrong weekend to mate the body to the subframe and rear-end, it was a 112 in the shade and 117 on my truck thermometer. To make this project even more rewarding the shop where the body is has no A/C just a portable evap cooler, so we put the car in the paint booth and pointed the cooler in that direction. The fun started Friday evening when I was loading the subframe in my old trailer, it was 108 and we were having one of our world famous summer dust storms, so fun. Well enough complaining, six bottles of water and four gatorades later I had it done, it was worth every minute of it and hopefully I'll have it done in time for cooler weather.

Thanks Steve. I have been watching your progress and love the car; a T/A with A/C very nice. Also, I think your helpers are a lot better looking than the ones I had, will they travel to AZ and help me hang some doors?

Hey, I notice that shop! I saw your car in person the last time I was in town, Mike. Looks great. Ricky was in the process of buffing it, I believe (?) I have no idea how he works in that kind of heat day in and out. It was pretty darn hot out there last month, and it was about 10 degrees cooler.

My '68 442 should be in his shop now along with parts of my '69 Camaro.

Very cool to see the car coming together. Congrats.

Re: 112 in the shade

Well, it's only 102 outside now and I am still working on it. We should have the stripes on it this week end, then more buffing and final assembly.

My budget is long gone, thank goodness I never really had a schedule, and I am so lucky to have a wife and family who understand this car illness. I can't wait to finish this one, I have another project waiting.

Mike, how's the car coming along? Was out at Rick's last weekend and noticed it was gone. This must mean you're getting close....

It came home Sunday afternoon. Ricky did a great job so all I have to do is put it back together with screwing something up.
It's been a tough week, I finally get the car home and had no time to work on it. Had to travel to San Antonio Texas for work on Monday, so it must wait until the weekend. Here are some progress pics, I just need more time and more money.

Re: 112 in the shade

No I didn't give up, I just haven't had much time and I am very slow at this. I can say one thing for sure, never again. Doing a real restoration is an incredible amount of work, very expensive and at times frustrating. If you have a full time job, kids and a wife you like, you may want to think twice about doing it yourself.

Anyway, here is an update. Engine and brakes are pumbed, exhaust is in, headliner is done and the interior is going together. Finally got the chrome done, and finished off the trunk; trunk was painted one year after M22mike gave me some pointers on how to do it, glad I took notes. I pushed it into the drive today for the first time since October 2009 and just got some pictures done before the rain came.. I will not give up, just need to save some money for the dated glass.. maybe next year.
