BE 12Bolt
1968 Camaro that is a project, I’ve had this car sitting for a couple of years now. I have no paper work to know what this car is for sure. It has RS components and Z/28 badges. Front disk, 6000 red line tach, 15in tire pressure sicker on glove box, motor and trans are missing. Car has a big block heater core. But it’s the 12 bolt that’s in the car stamped BE 0305G2
E The date code is too hard to read and I have not pulled the cover to see what guts are inside. And with the weather in Michigan it may be months before I am able to check. There is a guy who has been asking about buying the car. I don’t know how serious he is, I guess my question would be what would be a fair price. Car appears restorable but will need major attention. Thanks |
Re: BE 12Bolt
Get the cast date code off, Im still new on finding the history on "BE" rears, I have been told they are COPO specific, My 68 had a real late 68 or real early 69 Oct. date code, I think mine was a over the counter part every thing else on my car is, but have been told it never happened https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif also as I was warned get ready for alot of PM's https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif

Re: BE 12Bolt
I see no need to PM..if either of you are interested in selling your rear, please let me know. Thanks

Re: BE 12Bolt
Looks like a BL rear stamped to BE to me....
|
Re: BE 12Bolt
The stamping pattern lends credence to a possible restamped "BL" but could be legit BE as several 03B Yenkos have that exact dated rear. A better close-up of the casting date and pulling the rear cover would shed more light on things and help you to determine a fair price for the car if you decide to sell it.

Re: BE 12Bolt
I want to pull the cover off for my own curiosity and to clear up the questions being asked about it. But we are expecting a storm here tonight and the ground is too soft to try to move it right now so I don’t know when I’ll be able to do it. i am only around on weekends and it's hit and miss with weather. but when i do i will post the results.
thanks to all the help and replys. |
Re: BE 12Bolt
Hey Todd....What part of MI are you in? I am near Flint.

Looks like a BL rear stamped to BE to me.... [/ QUOTE ] That's what I thought about the last BE rear that popped up. But looking at pictures of real BE rears and even in Jerry's book, that's what most of the E's look like. So it could very well be an original BE rear. |
Re: BE 12Bolt
Shouldn't the E for Eaton and the E in BE look about the same? I would think they would be stamped at the same time.
|
Re: BE 12Bolt
Gary,
Both "E"s would have been hit with the same stamp when assembled and should look the same. Eric |
Re: BE 12Bolt
I can see where one might be hit harder (deeper) than the other, but it sure looks to my un-learned eye that the bottom and left hashes of the "E" in BE is deeper than the top and middle hashes. However on the "E" in the Eaton stamp, the hashes all look about the same depth.

However on the "E" in the Eaton stamp, the hashes all look about the same depth. [/ QUOTE ] My "BE" which has been in question by some, the E is real deep in the lower portion and left on lower case in the E in BE the E in eaton is sideways along the tube, but is also a bit deeper in the lower case, I have scribed them each and type set is the same. Now if a "BL" was restamped they would have to do the E for eaton as well, a BL is 3:07 open, no E for eaton, (hence a L changed to look like a E in "BE" would not match a fresh E for eaton) I still believe the BE was also available counter part and not just specific to the COPO or early YENKO cars. It is a fact the the gears were available before and way after as well as the carrier. My rear is a 10-68 it will fit the first YENKO order, but all parts in my car are 10-68 counter parts, I belive the rear was done the same time all else was. To me Todd's rear looks lagit, but very rusty the upper area seems to be hit hard with winter road grime, typical of the area. |

I respectfully disagree with this statement. I have had to tell several people that their swap meet deal was not such a great bargin due to restamped "L"s. |
Re: BE 12Bolt
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif Im not sure what you disagree on, The BL is for 307 open or they would have to stamp a E for eaton because a a BL would have no second E, I agree that there are alot of fakes out there, I have been told mine is a fake and I have been told its real, It doesnt matter much to me it came in my car, and probably going back in. Alan and other members here have been great in clearing things up https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: BE 12Bolt
Correct that a BL = 3.07 open.
This is the statement section that I disagree with. "(hence a L changed to look like a E in "BE" would not match a fresh E for eaton)" |
Re: BE 12Bolt

Re: BE 12Bolt
You got the pic posting down https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif your car is a good one to restore, with what you have said I would say it is a 375hp car by the big block heater box and 6k tach https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif take a pic on the frame mounts for the engine, and bolt holes on the tranny cross member. That would really be a good one to keep if you can Todd https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: BE 12Bolt
I'm in suspense......The car is on jack stands...Did you spin the rear to see if it is 4.10 posi? that's an easy way to tell if it is not original inside....assuming it is an original COPO rear
|
Re: BE 12Bolt
Did the cover come off yet?
|
Re: BE 12Bolt
here is the trans mount that came with the car, and a pic of the engine frame mount. found an 10 year old insurance certificate in the car, and will try to contact the guy to get more info.

Re: BE 12Bolt
Love the 68's.
Not sure if I missed it, but if you have factory installed rear springs what is the Leaf count? Z28 as built = 4 L78 as built = 5 Cool car and should be a fun project. Toss the rear in the dumpster and install a 9",,,, https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif Just kidding,, VERY neat Car. Jim |
Re: BE 12Bolt
took the cover off today, looks like the real deal. per the info i recieved from members thank's guys. have a look at a few more pic's.

Re: BE 12Bolt
Clearly, the BE rear is a great bonus, but to the car.... if the 6k tach, b/b heater core, and 15" wheels, are all original to the car, it can only be one of two thing. 1. a Yenko with COPO9737 Sports car conversion package, or 2. an L78 that Yenko ordered to convert to 427, and never got converted.
If the tach and heater core are original, and the tire sticker is not, it's probably an L78. If the tach and tire sticker are original, but the heater core is not, it's probably a Z/28. If none are original to the car, well then, it could be almost anything. With the exception of the last one, all of the other possibilities are good, but of course, scenario 1 is the best. (I personally think scenario two is the coolest) |
Re: BE 12Bolt
For 68, if it had the copo sports car package 9737, the trim tag will tell if it IS or NOT. Can we get a pic of the trim tag?
|
Re: BE 12Bolt
I just re-read the post - and the trim tag was in the pics....so, from what i can see, its not a 9737 copo car nor a yenko or non converted car. At least based on the data we have about yenko's and non converted cars.

Re: BE 12Bolt
Ed, Are you talking about a Mirror Magic tag? Can anyone explain why the Yenko cars got the special tag? What others got the tag?
|
Re: BE 12Bolt
Yes the magic mirror tag. We have seen some export cars with the MM tag....these cars were reg V8 and 6 cyl.
Yenko cars got the MM tag, plus the large sway bar and 140 speedo. |
Re: BE 12Bolt

Great score. Looks to be all original and intact.
Please post the casting date and assembly date for the posi unit. From your picture the assembly date will probably be stamped on the counter balance boss like the one I have attached. The casting date will be by the crosspin bolt head. Thanks in advance. Eric |
Re: BE 12Bolt
best i could do on a picture of a casting date
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/w...DSC01028-1.jpg assembly date http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/w...n_DSC01039.jpg |
Re: BE 12Bolt
Thank you for the pictures.
|
Re: BE 12Bolt
Why did the 68 Yenkos get the special tag? Was it only the COPO9737? Thanks
|
Re: BE 12Bolt
I believe it had to do with the "normal" tag stating something about meeting all federal regs. or something like that...and that's why the export cars don't have the normal tag also... I was wondering about that too...so the Yenkos were not meant for street use??..and what was the difference on the export cars?? Did they come with less standards?? no seatbelts or side marker lights or what??
Correct me if I am wrong on that..I am going from memory of a prior thread.... |
Re: BE 12Bolt
In order to create a 68 yenko car, it had to start out as a 9737 copo car. This special option coded car was avail to yenko chev only thru GM special order dept.... a special deal worked out with Don and GM. These cars got the special hardware and trim tag and special MV coded(stamped) 396/375hp motor. It is believed the trim tag was necessary to work around the US emisions, fed regs etc. The 9737 cars had all the necessary seat bealts, lights etc...and from what i have seen, so did the export cars.
