I do not believe that the bidder is genuine. I bet that he is a buddy of the "seller". Just don't smell right.....

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

My opinion is the seller is perhaps using this auction to draw attention to his business and his other auctions on Ebay. With a $3/4 million starting bid, it gets talked about in forums on all the car websites. For all we know the reserve is $10 million and there is not intention to sell and the bidders have no intention of buying. I think it would be at BJ in a few months if it was really going to be sold, but that's just my opinion.

Hotrodpaul 08-17-2005 04:44 AM

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

What would the Ebay sellers fee be if it did sell? On most of my auctions, they charge between 5% - 7% of the sales price. That could be $30,000 to $50,000! You can buy a decent original musclecar for that.

Ya know,I think the bid is legit. The bidder has 4627 positive feed backs,I don't think he would jeopardize his e-bay business for a scam. Come on Let's see the first MILLION dollar Camaro. If I had it I would buy it,Scott Tieman, It must be very nice. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

There are those who have called me paranoid and skeptical and even worse. But there is no way that bid is genuine IMHO. Did ZL-1s double overnight?

Or does someone think that because a 7000 mile repainted HEMI cuda with a NOM engine sold for 700K at the recent Mecum auction that a ZL-1 should now be 800K?????

I'm not sure what Ebay you use but the one I use charges a flat 40.00 insertion fee and an additional transaction fee of 40.00 if the car sells. Ebay does not charge a % of the sells price. Ebay Motor Fees

I don't think he realized the price structure for selling cars, as smaller items use a percentage system as he described... Cars used to be the same way... alot of ebay newbies don't realize that, but up until a few years ago ebay took a percentage of whatever the selling price was for cars... Anyone remember ebay with no pictures? hard to imagine buying stuff sight unseen, but I bought (and sold) alot of stuff that way back in the early days.

This will probably get me flamed hard on this muscle car board but if ZL-1s and 71 HEMI cuda's are NOW selling for 800K and 735K then I am saving up for a 660HP one of 400 handbuilt for the world Enzo Ferrari for around the same price?

My thouhts exactly on the Enzo. I tried to buy one before they hit a million. Missed out. Missed a wrecked one at $250k. Just not meant to be I guess. I can't guess what will happen to the muscle car mkt in 10 years but I would be willing to gamble on the Enzo. YMMV.

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

For what it is worth, I know #40 and was second in line to buy it from Al Maynard. You are right that Scott Tiemann's work is perhaps as good as it gets. He is an artist, just has that "magic touch" that makes even green cars look good! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

I was in the American Performance circle at Meadow Brook with Jim, showing my 65 Shelby GT350. We both won blue ribbons. #40 looked great, Jim has really done a nice job with the car installing an original interior he sourced from another Camaro.

As far as values and the legitimacy of the auction, well, if it sells we will know if it is real or not. If it does not sell, I would have to agree that this may be the best $40.00 Jim has ever spent advertising his business.

That being said, I hope he gets a million bucks for it, because I just bought ZL-1 #18, the ex-Charley Lillard / ex-Larry Bowman car - blue, 4 speed, original motor and lots of paperwork. I will be selling this car at the Mecum Fall Premier auction in October. You know, one of those live auctions where you can really see who is bidding - LOL. I am assuming the first bid on my car will not be $775k, but, if it is, my reserve will be off! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif

Patrick,

What 71 HEMI cuda hardtop has sold for more than the 735K this one brought and the 785K it brought a week later when the buyer at the auction sold it??? Are you referring to the 71 HEMI cuda convertible sales??

csx289 08-17-2005 07:07 PM

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

I think Patrick is referring to the one that sold recently for $1m. If Rich P wakes up and turns on his computer, I am sure he will fill us in. Well, we may not be able to understand what he types, but maybe we can hire a translator? LOL

I have heard of a few 71 Hemi Hardtops selling for more than $785k. And Galen Govier swears that Legendary's car did indeed have the original motor, as Galen found it for them and brokered the deal. Just what I have heard.

Fred E ? Rich P? Chime in, guys.

Congrats on the ZL1 Colin. That is one of the few with the orig. engine. Can I have it ? I think we now know what Colin is required to bring to the drags at SCR8. That really is a awsome car that I wouldn't mind owning again.

Pssst....For the kind words will you buy me a steak dinner in Monterey ?

csx289 08-17-2005 07:55 PM

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

Sorry Charley, no dinner for you. Me neither, I am on Beanie Weenies for a while from stretching to buy #18! But thanks for the kind words. And you can't "have" it, but you can own it again. I like that barn with the pretty floor.

Let's see, do I really want to drag race a ZL-1 and risk the original block? I am already down one race car this year, maybe I shouldn't push my luck?

I say we should have a Cobra vs. Super Snake drag race. I am ready to break into the 14's, how about you, Mr. "The Velcro Slowed Me Down"???

If you are game, I'll see if the lame guys from "Pinks" want to come and sanction the Shelby Show Down. I always wanted a Super Snake. LOL. Or, better yet, how about your hot rod 65 vs. my 289 Cobra? Just ideas......

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

When I called and talked to David at legendary prior to the car going to Mecum I was told the 7000 mile 71 HEMI cuda did not have the original motor or trans or original paint. When I asked where the original motor and trans were, David told me he didn't know. Which I found odd since they purchased the car from the second owner whom I presume purchased it from the original owner and had a ton of paperwork on the car??

After the auction I spoke to Galen about a great running HEMI challenger I had recently bought and we discussed the 71 HEMI cuda and the lack of an original motor so I am surprised to hear the car now has an original motor?

Even more surprised to hear there may be more sales of 71 HEMI cuda hardtops for over 785K. I would like to learn if this is reliable information or not?

csx289 08-17-2005 08:58 PM

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

When Legendary's green 71 was at the auction, I was walking around with Galen and he told me the whole story about how he located the original block and Peter rebuilt it and installed it in the car. I don't see what Galen would have to gain by stating the car had its original motor if in fact it did not? That would seem to be a loosing situation for Galen and his reputation. Peter and David from Legendary also told me the car now had its original motor back in it , and it was represented as such by the auction.

As far as originality , the whole car look restored to me , like it was a rotisserie job. Pretty much making the 7k miles a moot point , as the car looked brand new all over.

As far as my information on other sales, it was reported to be reliable but one can never tell with these Hemi Cuda sales reports. I heard all of the reports at Meadow Brook in the company of the Mopar gurus gathered around the Hemi convertible display. I've known Galen for 25 years give or take a few. He would not risk his reputation stating any information that was not accurate about a car. I would stress that if you heard it from him it is quite different than if someone told you he said it. You get a lot of that in today's market. Galen is a very good detective when it comes to tracking down old drivetrains. He does get paid well for his work, too.
