Which one of them is going to cost you more money in the long run? :D

RSSSfan 07-16-2020 01:19 PM

That's a sinister looking ride. Beautiful car, but I would have to do something about that faded carpet.

This is a real copo camaro. Jay Nixon restored it in early 80s. The car was originally orange and it was sold thru Queen City. Jay painted it black because thats what he wanted to do and in 82 who gave a crap. It did not have the original motor then but it did have a 435 horse Vette block. Jay sold it to Carl Dwiggens. Carl sold a group of cars to Reggie and this car was in the lot and at that time Carl had the protector plate for the car. I don't think Carl ever gave the protector plate up with the car. Chip Gerst worked for Reggie and I sold Reggie a pair of 840 heads for the correct engine because Reggie pulled the engine for a Vette he had. At the time of the engine swap Chip changed the original trim tag for a reproduction one with the black paint code, (bad move but its done and Chip has since passed away). The car then sold to Cecil and later to a collector in San Antonio who has passed away and his collection was sold to a local from San Antonio. It popped up on eBay as a clone and I was doing consulting work in Houston at the time when I seen it and recognized the front license plate as the COPO plate from Indiana when Jay owned it. I bought it later sold to Greg Nuge and so on. The car is absolutely real but unfortunately the trim tag was changed to match the color change. I can only assume that it was advertised as a clone when it was because there wasn't any paper for the car. I still have the Super Chevy magazine from when Jay had it featured there. April 1984 in memory serves me well.

I knew Chip had been very sick and he didn’t look good the last time I saw him. He told me he wasn’t doing well, but I didn’t hear that he passed away. Quite the story/history with that car; some of the ‘80s resto stuff appears to still be present. Not many people knew or cared about these cars back then and the aftermarket was in it’s infancy with regards to parts availability. Very little support for some aspects of restorations, and I’m not 100% sure, but I seem to remember only one supplier for seat covers and carpet. As time went on, restorations and the quality of them flourished and the hobby grew into an industry in and of itself. Also, the “black web” of the hobby was taking hold as “numbers” were becoming more important as prices started to escalate for rare cars. Just think how many restorable cars (by today’s standards) were discarded back then....now we cherish untouched 307 Powerglide cars; back then we’d part ‘em out to build something better.

Hotrodpaul 07-17-2020 05:49 PM

I wonder if the original trim tag exists, and who might have it? Without any pics of trans and rear stamps, I wonder if any of the drive train is born with?

Astock 07-17-2020 08:42 PM

I use to get a kick out of hearing the building in Costa Mesa referred to as a restoration shop. A numbers chop-shop would have been a more appropriate description. Don't hold out any hope of that tag not going in the trash.

mprice 07-18-2020 03:29 AM

As far as the original drive train in the car I can tell you that the only original major piece is the trans. I suspect that the rear wasn't even original when Jay acquired it in 82. I say that because Jay always said it was a 4:56 and the car still retains a 4:56 today. As far as the car having an AC dash pad at Barrett someone had installed an aftermarket air unit. When I purchased it there was remnants of where it had been. Remember the car spent most of its life in California and Texas. The orange paint is still behind the seat as well as the X4 crayon.

nugeusa1 07-19-2020 12:04 AM

I bought this car from Mick, not only I believe this car is genuine it has an outstanding rock solid body. I would still have it today but was offered a deal I couldn’t refuse trade wise. My good friend Dave Tinnell did a few cosmetic Changes for mr Dwiggens Before it was sold to Reggie . It’s real and a very, very solid COPO

bergy 07-19-2020 08:15 AM

Does anyone know if the correct body number is on the repro trim tag? What is the body number?

The 1969 shipping report data used by the NCRS includes the body number (same as order number). It is withheld from the reports they sell unfortunately. Most likely this is part of the Corvette document validation service, for example the one affixed to the gas tank

mprice 07-19-2020 04:15 PM

I can't be sure but Chip ordered the replacement trim tag and I imagine that the body number on the car is the original one. I know he didn't change the date and the only thing he had a reason to change was the color simply because he didn't want to paint it. He talked to me before he done it but done it anyway. I know for fact that the protecto plate existed for this car when Jay and Carl owned it, but who dropped the ball on transferring it we will likely never know.

R68GTO 07-19-2020 09:36 PM

Couple of interesting things that caught my eye in the article....4.56 ratio rear - would that show on the POP? Was chambered exhaust optional on COPO Camaros?

Carleen 07-19-2020 10:29 PM

From CRG

NC8
Exhaust system, dual, chambered. Standard on Z28, L34, L78, and L89 until 25Nov68.
Production ended 19May69.

All ZL-1 cars were equipped with AIR pumps and Gibbs' cars were produced with standard N10 dual exhaust.

William 07-20-2020 12:52 AM

Chambered exhaust was available for order until May 6th.

From the Zone letter:

"In addition, the NC8 dual chambered exhaust for Camaro SS will be cancelled effective May 19, 1969 at the assembly plants. All orders specifying this option will be produced with regular dual exhausts."

So, no NC8 after approximately VIN N645xxx.

NorCam 05-20-2021 04:40 PM

Just curious, since this car has resurfaced for sale and is noted as possibly being real, then why didn't someone contact Carl Dwiggens to get the POP plate since it was reported to have been with the car back then?

I'm assuming he has passed since owning it and it's now nowhere to be seen?
