Re: 1965 Chevelle L79
The 300 hp 327 was available in June 1964.
This subject has been discussed on Team Chevelle. Here are the links. http://www.chevelles.com/ref/64main.shtml http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213030 http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283775 I always wondered if any 1964 L-76 Malibu Super Sports were ever made. |

Hi, can you shed some light about the unique '64 Malibu SS available in May or June of 64. 327 / 365 horse solid lifter engine package with 4 speed only. I recently looked at one , same owner past 40 years looks very original and untampered with. </div></div> I don't proclaim to be all-knowing, but I seriously doubt that this car ever came from the factory that way. Late in the 64 model year, the 300hp 327 became available on the Chevelle. There have been occasional rumors about the existence of higher hp versions of the 327 in the 64 Chevelle, but to my knowledge there has been no substantive proof of same. EDIT: oops, I see Tory has already linked some of the many discussions on Team Chevelle about this subject. |
Re: 1965 Chevelle L79
I didn't read the links to the Chevelle site, so this might be a repeat. The Chevy production records I have indicate there were 1737 300hp 327s built in the '64 Chevelle. (a few more for export) There is no production record of any L-76 produced. It was obviously "planned" though because Chevrolet's Finger Tip Facts book for '64 (which every salesman used for ordering information & specs) does the list the L-76 as available in the Chevelle. So, it's confusing but I'd go with the actual production records published by Chevy which state none were built.

Question was also brought up on the Chevy Talk site and Rich Martin posted this image.

Re: 1965 Chevelle L79
I had forgotten that I posted that list of RPOs. I also have a list of model year total production of each option but I'm hesitant to post it due to copyright law. I've tried to reach the owner of the information for permission to no avail. Suffice to say (repeating) that no L76 production is listed for Chevelle.
Since that is a list of "RPO" installed options, I doubt it would contain any COPO cars. Verne |
