Has there been any progress on tracking the car?

Pro Stock John 11-03-2024 06:10 PM

No, the lead into NC didn't result in any progress.

bracketracer-78 01-05-2025 07:54 PM

Just an observation. In July the Pittsburgh car was at the camaro Nationals in Morgantown PA. This past weekend at the dragfest at the Lebanon county PA expo center there were a few second gen tribute cars and Larry Lombardo was in attendance but there was a certain 68 camaro not in attendance. Just an fyi the Lebanon county PA expo center is 2 exits closer off the PA turnpike then the Morgantown exit to Pittsburgh.

A pic was posted on FB, its the car before Joe Algieri took it a part and did a bunch of work to it.

A often-shared pic of the Camaro:

Love the picture in the background of the Cuda and it's tow vehicle!

The reverse lockout handle is a 67 Camaro/firebird only Hurst aluminum handle than was cut down. Pretty darn cool.

And where might someone find one of those today ? and would it cost less than $1,000..LOL
That handle should fit a '68 also, as they are the same in the Competition Plus line.

Pro Stock John 08-28-2025 08:58 PM

I'm still surprised this car hasn't surfaced. Maybe one day we'll find out.

Doug Boyce did a great job of researching all the cars but this one and the '69 both kinda disappeared into the fog of the past.

66cayne 08-28-2025 10:57 PM

I wonder how many of these he grenaded over the course of a racing season? This is #13 so maybe at least 12?

Carleen 08-28-2025 11:12 PM

Has anyone talked to Richie Zul? If he's still alive?
He might know what happened to the 1968 and 1969 Camaros.
If I remember correctly, he bought the Toy VI from Jenkins.

Pro Stock John 08-29-2025 01:45 AM

I'm pretty sure he's still kicking, lives in Long Island NY. His son posts in the FB Nostalgia Pro Stock group if one of Richie's old rides is posted.

I read an interview that grumpy had a guy do nothing but rebuild trannys at his shop.

One of the guys who owned IV, Bob Veniero, posted this pic of the car today.

I think he owned IV and then sold it to the guy who redid the car and later sold it as a roller and then it become lost.

This popped up f-book last night

Pro Stock John 03-04-2026 04:26 PM

Yeah Joe is the guy who sold it as a roller and doesn't remember any of the buyer's info since it was around 1980.

Supposedly someone brought the car to an event Bill/Grumpy was at and he confirmed it was the car, Ritchie Schmidt would remember that story.

Lynn 03-23-2026 03:18 AM

So, is this just a fabricated story?

https://www.onallcylinders.com/2016/...toy-iv-camaro/

I see this story from time to time on line.

This was posted on FB today. Same car?

Pro Stock John 03-23-2026 03:54 AM

Yes that is a clone car in that article. Richie thinks it could be an old race car from that era, but this clone is built on a '67 and the original car was a '68.

Your second link doesn't work for me.

That was proven to be false years ago. I seem to remember the original color was wrong and they got super, super cagey about the trim tag. I think Grump himself hung up on them at one point if I remember the story right.

FTC 03-27-2026 04:20 PM

This whole story, and this whole history is extremely interesting and always peaks my interest any time it's brought up again.

Pro Stock John 03-27-2026 07:07 PM

Probably already mentioned in this thread, but reportedly the car was brought to an event Grumpy was at and he verified it was the car. Anyone remember this story?

I know at least one person who knows the vin so if anyone ever has a lead, I can put them in touch with the guy.
