The shot of molten aluminum is rammed into die under high pressure, hence pressure cast.
Wheels are gravity cast.

Bring back memories (and smells!) of working in diecast - rows of pressure cast machines pumping out throttle bodies, carbs, etc.

With my (new to me) Mr DeBurr shaker machine. It came with what appears to be
white ceramic media.

What media do you know of might be best for cleaning/refinishing aluminum castings
and then there is the question of rough sand castings and smooth die castings like valve covers ????

And what about the liquid fluids in each case

We have a parts tumbler in our shop and have used it for small parts.
We used a local shop for cleaning larger items like the trans casein the photos. The process is called vapor blasting and the outcome is amazing, items like a trans case have a lot of small crevices that the larger media from a Little Scrubber cant get into.

Wow, those trans cases turned out real nice!!

I use glass bead then I shot peen tumble. The cases do not finger print and any dirt or oil will just wipe clean. Those Vapor blasted cases look great.

Jim, Your muncie looks great. I have a few questions.

1) Do you wire the case, tailhousing etc to the "cage" in your shot blasting machine
vs allow it to "tumble" in the slow moving cage ???

2) Been too long since I did the parts in my pics so honestly dont remember,
but wont the shot (blasting) hurt the smooth skin on the die cast tailhousing and side cover...where as the main cast is a "rough" service sand casting..... Intake = Sandcasting......Alternators, Valve Covers = Die Cast

3) I want to try that Aluminum Star media (or whatever Alum media I wind up buying) in my "new" MrDeburr shaker on Dia Castings

Hey Chuck, I should wire to the cage but usually don't. The casting doesn't lose much of the sand casting but if it does,it is so much nicer than the old stained case. My machines do not add any heavy texture to the smooth cases. I have been doing a lot of Muncie cases for a local builder and he as well as his customers are very happy with the look of my Muncie cases.

I have had some problems with aluminium heavy duty Delco alternator fans getting distorted form the shot peen, so I paint those. That is the only part I have ever noticed getting screwed up in the shot peen machine.

I still have not located the star media, I think it is buried in a alternator or starter barrel.It will turn up someday.
