Re: Roughing It On An Epic Road Trip
Looks like the Big Texan hasn't changed a bit -- did you try to hammer one of those huge steaks? Looks like they've moved the Cadillac Ranch off the road some -- used to be closer to the highway. TAZ

I am jealous - awesome to share the experience with your son. I've driven 66 two dozen times and it never gets old.

Re: Roughing It On An Epic Road Trip
My son and I did a 12 day road trip through Europe in 2004 including seeing the 24 hrs of Lemans. Drove all over Germany and visited all the car factories and Museums. This past June we went to the Olds Homecoming for a quick 24 hr father son get together (he is now 33, Married and a father). Had just as much fun in 24 hrs as we did in 12 days 11 years ago. Next road trip will be with him and his daughters someday. His main concern is Pops (me) gets a little vocal with other drivers habits and he does not want his kids exposed to my verbal wrath.
I am changing my approach to something like this: "Look girls, this fine gentleman in front of us, who has just been admitted to our wonferful country to start a new life is learning to drive cautiously in the left lane and keep us from speeding and breaking the law. Next time we stop at a store lets see if we can find a drivers liscence in a cracker jack box." |
Re: Roughing It On An Epic Road Trip
Yes, I did change the hub caps. Banged the originals back on. A parts driver traded my 3 SS caps for 2 in the last picture.
We made it home today! Glad to be back and anxious to clean the Impala up. With the air filter change, MPG's went up to 18 and 19. Today took us through Albuquerque, Gallup, a fuel stop in Holbrook, AZ, Windslow, Flagstaff, then south on the 17 to home. Felt surreal driving that car into my neighborhood. What a great adventure! We've been chatting about our favorite road trip parts ever since. The best motel was the Best Western in Frankfort, KY and there was a tie for crappiest, the "Luxury" Inn of Mustang, OK and the disComfort Inn in Towson, MD. Best meal was at the Big Texan, and the best green beans were are the Rock Cafe. Very thankful I had the opportunity to do this with my son. Hope I get the opportunity again. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0114-image.jpg Stayed in Moriarty, NM last night. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0115-image.jpg At the Super 8 in Moriarty, where every other building is a fireworks store. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0116-image.jpg On the road again https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0117-image.jpg We've got a long way to go, and a short time to get there...... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0118-image.jpg At a rest stop in AZ https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0119-image.jpg At home modeling 2 new hub caps. Friday, I will begin cleaning and detailing. Needs it bad! |

At a rest stop past Frederick, MD https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9826-image.jpg At the rest stop </div></div> I know that place. I live 45 mins away from there - northwest across the PA border. You were fairly close to the Mason Dixon dragstrip when you were at that rest stop. |

Re: Roughing It On An Epic Road Trip
I have about 23 hours into this Impala cleaning it up. Cleaning wasn't so bad, but this old single stage paint is kinda dead. But I did the best I could with what I have to work with. When it cools off here in Phoenix, I might buff on it again.
The original interior is fantastic! And those mag style hub caps are cool. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0207-image.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0208-image.jpg Interior is very nice. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0209-image.jpg The bench seat easily slides back and forth. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0210-image.jpg With all of the junk out of the trunk, the rear isn't so low. |
