How One Man Turned The Busiest International Border Crossing In North America Into The Centerpiece Of His Empire

Quote:

Manuel “Matty” Moroun died on Monday at 93 years old. That name might not mean much to you if you’re not from metro Detroit or Windsor, Canada, but around these parts, he was known mainly as the billionaire who owned, among other things, the Ambassador Bridge, which just happens to carry roughly 27 percent of all merchandise trade between Canada and the U.S.

That’s $400 billion in trade a year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation with an average of $500 million in trade crossing the bridge daily. It generated $60 million in tolls for Moroun, according to the Detroit Free Press. At least 40 percent of trucking shipments into the US cross this bridge and the closest secondary crossing for big rigs is over two hours away, Forbes reports.

Not only is it the busiest international crossing in North America, but it is also the only one to be privately owned. Does it seem to you like this span is too important a crossing to be in private ownership? Because it always has to me! It spent two years as the longest suspension bridge in the world. How do you just own something so massive and crucial to the functioning of two huge economies?

In New Jersey and Pennsylvania, it is illegal to hang “any object or material … from the inside rearview mirror.”

It is illegal here in Illinois too

I had a temporary handicap placard after hip surgery and the BMV said it is illegal to drive with this on your mirror. You see it all the time.

Too Many Projects 01-01-2021 02:19 PM

Many states have laws against anything hanging, or attached, in a drivers view that creates a sight obstruction, not limited to mirrors. Club and event stickers on the windshield can be considered a sight obstruction in MN. And a handicap placard on the mirror, must be removed here to, when not parked.

Lots of dangerous Dream Catchers/Fuzzy Dice/Rosaries etc on cars around here.
I dislike any obstructions in view also even remove interior mirrors from some dual side mirror cars.

----The closest border crossing he is referring to is the Blue Water Bridge from Port Huron to Sarnia, and it is an hour away, not two. It also carries a tremendous amount of cargo across in both directions 24/7!.....Bill S

Maybe it's the lawyer in me but I would then just remove the rear view mirror and hang things in its place. The way the statutes are written, if there is no mirror there, the case would be subject to a summary judgement for failing to prove a specific element of the crime had occurred.

Or in the alternative, I would just get a half dozen other rear view mirrors and hang them from the first rear view mirror.

You wouldn't be able to drive your car because it wouldn't pass inspection. Inside rearview mirror is a mandatory item. Just like an outside left sideview mirror. Right is optional. But in the event that your RVM fell off and you were too lazy to fix it and you were stopped by a Cop, you could receive a ticket and a fine.

If you were a tourist in ancient times there would be some big sights on your travel wish list: the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. From the Lighthouse of Alexandria to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon these feats of engineering were built by the Greeks and Egyptians thousands of years ago. Only one of the seven – the Great Pyramid of Giza – remains broadly intact. So here, with the help of NeoMam Studios we’ve reimagined what these incredible places would look like if they were tourist attractions today.
