The photo showing casualty evacuation pods attached to an F-5, the reconnaissance variant of the P-38 Lightining. The concept dates back to World War 2 when “body-bags” or wing-mounted enclosures were tested on British Spitfires as well as Stuka dive bombers and ME 109 fighters. Tests were conducted even in the U.S.

Wooden wheels were attached to a P-51A Mustang so that it could be moved around the ramp at the Inglewood, California plant of North American Aviation. When it is ready for flight tests, regular landing wheels with rubber tires will be substituted. This is believed due to the shortage of rubber at the time and the need to prolong the life of the tires once mounted.
Note the "DO NOT INFLATE" on the inside of the wheel. The article lists this as the P51A but I am thinking this is the earlier A36 Apache. Anyone else know for sure? |
Kinda surprised to see "do not inflate" on a wooden wheel back in those days. Sounds very much like a sticker you might see on a piece of wood in todays world!

I'm betting there were a few "pranksters" back then too...

What could be one of the best meteor showers of 2020 is happening this weekend. NASA reports the Geminid meteor shower occurs between Dec. 4 to Dec. 17 every year, with the best nights for viewing on Dec. 13 and Dec. 14. NASA reports that the peak will happen the night of Dec. 13 into the morning of Dec. 14. Those in the Northern Hemisphere should have a good view all night, with the peak around 2 a.m. Sunday. Observers can expect to see close to 60 meteors per hour, according to NASA. |

In the back seat was the rescue diver and in the front with me, a doctor. During the pre-race briefings, the course layout was explained and marker buoys were in place at the turns. Due to my speed restrictions I didn't have a hope to keep up with the boats which sped by like I was backing up... Over the years I got to know the Victory Team quite well and they were a great group of talented individuals. Good memories, thanks... Cheers cal |

I use Bing because it tells me how big the photos are and has a feature that allows me to look at the different sizes (if they exist) for the photo I am looking at. |

New York’s 21 Club Closing, Ending Historic Run That Began During Prohibition Era That's a shame. A true New York City institution. I have eaten many a lunch and dinner there with clients to celebrate deals done while I was working in NYC from 1983 to 1990. It was the 21 Club, Tavern On The Green, The Palm and Smith and Wollenskys for celebrations. Oh . . . and Sushi Zen for those clients that wanted sushi. |
