I visited that lot and you can still hear the rumble of all those factory 427s.
here is a pic from last year. Ground is a lot higher because of filling by the Gov. to seal the radiation. |

here is close up of sign and info from Gov web site
In 1978, Congress passed the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) to clean up 24 abandoned sites nationally that had processed uranium and related ores for the federal government. Under the UMTRCA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was directed to set general standards for the cleanup at the processing sites and properties where tailings had been blown by the wind or used in construction. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was authorized to clean up the sites to meet EPA standards with the concurrence of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Remedial actions at UMTRA Project sites must also comply with the EPA ground water protection standards published in the Federal Register in January 1995. The inactive uranium processing site in Canonsburg, Pa., was designated for remedial action under the provisions of the UMTRCA. It is one of 24 UMTRA Project sites located in nine western states and Pennsylvania. The purpose of remedial action is to minimize or eliminate potential health hazards resulting from exposure of the public to residual radioactive materials (RRM) at the processing sites and at vicinity properties. Cleanup of the Canonsburg site was conducted under the direction of the DOE in cooperation with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. SITE DESCRIPTION The 18.6-acre Canonsburg site contained 376,100 cubic yards of RRM, and lies between Chartiers Creek and the ConRail tracks in the Borough of Canonsburg. About 54,000 cubic yards of RRM from the site were moved to a nine-acre site in Burrell Township between October 1956 and January 1957. The Burrell site is about one mile east of Blairsville, Pa., between the Conemaugh River and the ConRail tracks. HISTORY OF THE SITE The Canonsburg site was operated as a radium extraction plant by Standard Chemical from 1911 to 1922. Later, Vitro Corporation of America acquired the property and processed ore to extract radium and uranium salts. From 1942 until 1957 Vitro was under contract to the federal government to recover uranium from ore and scrap. For the next nine years, the site was used only for storage under an Atomic energy Commission contract. In 1967, the property was purchased by the Canon Development Company and was leased to tenant companies for light industrial use. REMEDIAL ACTION Remedial action at the Canonsburg site consisted of placing the RRM in a disposal cell designed to meet EPA longevity standards for 200 to 1,000 years of safe storage. The cell occupies six acres and has a clay liner to protect ground water from contamination by RRM. The tailings were placed atop the liner and covered with three feet of clay, soil and a bentonite mixture, which serves to prevent the escape of radon gas from the tailings and the penetration of water into the cell. The radon barrier was then covered with layers of rock and soil and seeded with grass. Remedial action was completed in 1985 at the Canonsburg processing site. The RRM at the Burrell Township site was stabilized in a manner similar to the approach used at the Canonsburg site. Remedial action was completed in July 1987. The NRC licensed the Burrell site in May 1994 and the Canonsburg site in January 1996. |

Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
Dennis,
-------I couldnt help but notice the Knock-off wheels on the rear of "Hoss".Was the car raced in that configuration?Pretty cool!Over the years I have had knock-offs on a number of different(non Corvette)cars. The strangest being a 1950 Fleetline Chevy, and even then they looked great. They also look bad on 66/67 Novas.A buddy of mine has an original set on his 327/350 66 Nova today.Ive offered him a set of any aftermarket wheels he wants and cash, but he loves them as I do,and wont be talked out of them.Hoss looks very cool with them on the back.Cant quite see if they are on the front or not...........Bill S |
Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
Dennis, I love your pics The one of Little Hoss in the lot is priceless. Who are the people in that shot? The one of my car has Herb,Helen and Glen. Also is that Jim Hayter next to Fred in the other Hoss pic? Kim

Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
Many of you who attended last year's Supercar Reunion may recognize this holding lot pic from my brother Joe's outstanding Supercar memorabilia collection. He owns that one as well as several hundred others that were plucked from Don's personal stash. He's got a few of the unconverted COPO Chevelles in the holding lot as well, and even one of a '69 427 Nova on the Yenko/SPAN transporter. Just another reason for you all to come to the York US 30 reunion...he's considering doing a memorabilia showcase there as well, heck maybe it'll even make the newsletter. Keep em comin' guys, love to see all the period pics.

Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
oleredalert,
Havn't been to a reunion recently have you? See the shot of Lil Hoss for the 2001 SYC gathering, look under 2001 reunion on this site, and other pics on related posts. Ray, that 56 looks great. My first car was a 55 hdtp. |

Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
The Z/L1 #1 launch is a new pic to me. I am assuming that is dated 1969 cause the car graphics look pretty tame. Who is driving? Herb?

Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
This is the coolest thread ever! Come on Dennis post the pics! Hey I posted the Denny Terrio pic of my pops. ( I would have posted pics of my self back then but I was not there.) How much worse than that can it get?
|
Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
Not sure who was driving in that picture but pretty sure it's not Herb. Looks way too big for him.. It's a very early picture of the car since it's still sporting the first paint scheme.

Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
I'll see what I can find. I know I have some shots of the car sitting on the starting line at the strip we used to run. It still has the '70 plates on it.
Patience, Grasshopper! |
Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
Bill,
Ken can fill you in on the history of Lil' Hoss better than I, but yes, it did have the knock-off's on the front also. That was the race configuration back then as well as it's current look. I agree, COOL! Kim, If you're referring to the shot of "Hoss" while it's still in Royal Plum colors, the line-up left to right is Herb, Fred and Mr. Chevrolet Himself. |

I received this picture from the original owner of my 68 Z. I always wondered why a car with 21,000 miles needed to be repainted and this answered my question.

Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
Steve,
I have a copy of that same piece. Look back at my picture of Kim's car and you'll see the Gibb and Harrell names are reversed. The cover is an artist's rendering of the actual car. Also notice the difference in the decal placement. I'm a graphic artist by profession and I can tell you through experience "Never believe what you think you see." Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
Frank/Rick,
I can't post the shots of my car here. Read the thread title; "Vintage CAMARO Pics." Don't want anyone thinking I'm trying to pass it off as the World's Fattest Camaro. (Yes, I said FATTEST; not Fastest!) |

Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
ORIGLS6:
I'm thinking your last picture (https://www.yenko.net/attachments/36727-fgcars.JPG) "might" be from their trip out west? If I'm not mistaken, in tow (and visible) is a '68 funny car, I "think" Little Hoss(?), the "Paddy Wagon" (not sure about the history of that!), and it looks like a couple of other cars. Seems like I've heard of a trip out west of 5(?) cars, all red in color, which included a '68 fc, Little Hoss, and a '68 Chevelle in the group. Dad is, ironically, working on the funny car as I type or I would ask him, so some of you Gibb and Harrell guys help me out here... |
Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
Probably right Rob. That's definitely Hoss and the Paddy Wagon behind the FC. I even recognize the trailer that's hauling Hoss. Just wonder what's on the trailer behind the FC hauler.

I don't think those palm trees in the background are native to the Midwest.

Re: Vintage Camaro Pics
Must be the 1968 AHRA WinterNationals trip (late Jan '68). I think the '67 Funnycar was the one on the trailer. There were to be 4 cars, the two funnycars, Little Hoss, and a Chevelle stocker. The Chevelle was also red with a black top. It never made it, as it arrived at the dealership too late for the trip. It never did make it to racecar status, as it sat at Dick's shop and eventually was bought by Dave Libby's brother. It was the sister to the Joe S. Harrell Chevelle. I wonder if this may be one of the first shots of Dick's '68 funny? No black top yet. I am not sure if he had both funny's there, as an article I have indicates only one funny and Little Hoss made it to the Winternationals. Dick had to lease one of the funnys to a friend. Maybe it was brought with for the lease arrangement.
ORIGLS6, Those pics are great, havn't seen them before. |
