Dealer plates
 

here is what i have

I'm guessing there is not a way to do what you are trying to do, without the DMV records, since the plates were not created for a specific dealer (unlike the literature which is the subject of this thread).

The leading digit might indicate a region, perhaps by county (like the standard Ohio plates*). If you can find an original plate still in the paper wrapper there might be a legend printed on it to help you decode, to narrow your search. I have seen this on some of the Michigan Dealer plates in my collection. Mine where handed down directly so I know the dealer (and salesperson) for the plates in my possession.

*My college roommate worked for New Departure Hyatt in Sandusky and had access to GM company owned vehicles. He was driving a company car one time with an Ohio manufacturer plate, which was stamped "Special" in the location where the county information normally appears.

A woman stopped him while he was putting gas in it, and she said: "...ya know, I've lived in Ohio my whole life, and I don't know where 'Special' county is...."

ok well thanks anyway thats what i figured was there would be no way to find out. if i'm not mistaken "special" is a government plate. meet a guy at a swap meet and thats all he collected was government plates.

I looked up NCRS but the 2 dealers listed appear to be newer

Folks I know this thread is super old but I need to know if anyone has the dealer name for Dealer code 316 zone 44. The NCRS dont have the dealers name but they say the dealer ship Begins with an M.

I am still hunting dealer 833 in zone 23 (Oklahoma).

Still thinking it might be the old Scott Chevrolet. NCRS shows Scott as "unknown".

Thanks my Chevy II sold 2/27/66

The NCRS historical docs done the shipping report but would not conform the dealer. All they said dealer began with M and was out of OH or MI.
Would love to see some ones build sheet or original window sicker with that Dealer code 316 and Zone 44 Marsh and son not Sanford and son. NCRS will revise my report with that.

That NCRS still won't revise my shipper without seeing the actual proof not the dealer advertisement. I get it. Without seeing a real build sheet or original window sticker.

When dealers changed hands (or names) did they normally keep the same dealer code?

Example: Seltzer Chevrolet (Yukon, OK) was bought out by Alan Merrell around 1971 or so.
Seltzer was dealer number 835 in Zone 23. Did Alan Merrell Chevrolet keep the same number?

I am still hoping to find dealer 833 in zone 23.

Looking for infromation on Zone #31 Dealer #260

NCRS site says Hubbard Chevrolet which is Portland OR - don;t think that is correct

Other sites saying Zone 31 is Alabama which is closer to what I think is correct. From what I recall I believe it to be a dealer in Tennesee or Alabama - maybe Huffstutler (sp?) Chevrolet.

Any help is appreciated. I also e-mailed Paul to see what he has,

Zone 31 Dealer 322
 

I am looking for the name and address for Zone 31 (Alabama) Dealer 322 for 1970. One of my 1970 Novas was made 14 Jan 1970 from the Chevy Muscle Docs report.

The car was purchased new by a family in Enterprise, Al. Their oldest daughter was going off to college in Florida. Their requirement was that the car must have Air Conditioning.

Enterprise, Al had Ray Hughes Chevrolet (Dealer 261). Incorporated 9 Aug 1967 and dissolved 7 Nov 2005. The Address was Rucker Road and Dixie Drive - Enterprise (from and add in the Dothan Eagle 4 Jan 1970) Ray Hughes was purchased in 2003 and renamed Enterprise Chevrolet (Zone 8 Dealer 262) by the new owners. (Dothan Eagle 26 Dec 2003). Ray Hughes died in 2004. I did contact Enterprise Chevrolet, Inc. asking for any information on other former dealers. They provided no information. Not even that is was formerly Ray Hughes Chevrolet.

Since the dealer wasn't Ray Hughes, I suspect that this was a dealer transfer. 322 is between Klumpp Motor Co (Dealer 307) and Ivan Leonard Chevrolet Inc. (Dealer 323).

Klumpp (Dealer 307) out of Foley, Al was incorporated 1 Mar 1949 and dissolved 18 Mar 1986. (according to https://opencorporates.com/)
Ivan Leonard (Dealer 323) out of Hoover, AL was incorporated on 28 Sep 1972 and dissolved 25 Oct 2016. (according to https://opencorporates.com/) The dealer opened 1 Apr 1973 (from article in The Birmingham News 7 Jan 1973).
Or
Littrell Motor Company, Inc. (Dealer 325) out of Athens, AL was incorporated 2 Jul 1962 and dissolved 14 Oct 1987. No Newspaper activity in 1970.



Does anyone have information on Zone 31 Dealer 322?

Does anyone have a dealer number for these other dealers not listed in the NCRS database for Zone 31 around 1970?

Lacey Chevrolet Co., Inc., Birmingham, AL. (Dealer number unknown) was incorporated 10 Nov 1927. Previously Berry Chevrolet Co. No dissolution date. No Newspaper hits.

Herman Landers, Inc., Wedowee, AL. (Dealer number unknown) was incorporated 17 Feb 1941. Dissolved 31 Dec 1976. Previously Weathers Motor Company before the 1965. No Dealer adds but did sponsor a high school football team (The Anniston Star 30 Aug 1970).

Landrum Chev Olds Wetumpka, AL (Dealer number unknown) Incorporated 27 Jan 1953. Application withdrawn. In business from a small newspaper classified (Alabama Journal 12 Dec 1970) Newspaper activity through 1981.

J. M. Lee Chevrolet-Olds, Inc. Foley, Al. (Dealer number unknown) Incorporated 16 Sep 1967. Dissolved 5 Feb 1988. No newspaper ads in 1970. Did sponsor a local adult basketball team in 1970-71. This dealer might have had a earlier dealer number since it could be a "J" dealer.

Leeds Chevrolet Co., Inc., Leeds, Al.(Dealer number unknown) Incorporated 24 Jun 1930. No dissolution date. No newspaper hits in 1970.
