Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Update.....after measuring everything,I had to modify the trans crossmember to move the mounting pad back 2 1/4 ".....So....How to keep everything else in shape and position on a bent up piece of tubing.......Heres how we did it...If you notice the flame cut ends from the factory.....Converts had a boxed frame so they obviously had to narrow them to fit the narrower frame width......Factory??????
Starting point....... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03607.jpg Found some steel in the shop that fit the trans mount pad perfectlly and it raised the end frame mount surfaces off the table, found some steel that fit under the frame mounts and some little gusset pieces to support the mount midway.....now the mounting pad was flat on the spacer, we welded the crossmember to the welding table.......this also kept the mount angle relatve to the frame mounting.... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03611.jpg Got out the sawsall and cut the mount section out...... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03612.jpg Using the spacer block under the mount pad.....I measured the 2 1/4" and made some side plates to suit and welded everything back together... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03615.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03616.jpg Took it home to test fit and found out I needed to add a little more clearance (If I was smart I would have brought the mount to the shop instead of leaving it in the garage....Duhhh!!!) http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03629.jpg Put it in place and the mounting bolts dropped right in.......Lucky!!! http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03633.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03634.jpg Next I'm going to remake the store bought engine/mount plates to raise the engine 5/8" to clear the front frame crossmember....tomorrows project.... The Holley engine/trans pans sit pretty good in the car....... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03638.jpg Before Holley came out with this pan, some of the earlier pans used hung down well below the crossmember...... Getting Closer!! http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...DSC05800-1.png |

Great fabrication as always Ken! I think we will all enjoy another fabrication story.

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Ken, it would look cool if you added another tri-angle gusset and then boxed it in. Then you would have a match look to the front cut angle. Make things more symetrical. Roger

Roger.........When the engine comes out while the car is at the body shop, I'm going to box the whole unit together..... |

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
I needed to raise the Engine about 5/8" to get the Pan off the Crossmember.....Rather than mess around with Frame mounts and Motor mounts, I decided to make new motor mount adaptor plates......because the mounts are on an angle and I wanted to raise the engine, I had to figure out how much to move the rubber mount holes and how much thicker to make the plate to get everything to fall into place.....here are some pic's
Store bought plate in black......you can see how the 3 rubber mount holes are moved down and the plate is also thicker http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC06161.jpg New plate mounted to the engine...... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC06157.jpg Rubber mount installed...... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC06159.jpg Engine down on the mounts and the holes line up perfectly....Just slid the bolts in....I love it when a plan comes together.... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC06164.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC06165.jpg Pan not sits nicely above the crossmember..... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC06166.jpg And sits perfectrly with the bottom of the crossmember http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC06173.jpg Also got my raised alternator mounting kit.... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC06174.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC06175.jpg |

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Ken,
Do you have a pattern (blueprint)for those plates? I would like to buy a set if possible. That would improve everything I am concerned about with my conversion. Thanks, Tim |

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Got entergetic this morning and created a major mess in the garage.....took the front end apart....Grille, bumper, lights, etc.......also took off the rear bumper assy.....the car is going for Media blasting on Tuesday....when it gets finished there (gonna be interesting to see what's under the 1/8" of paint) I'll bring it back home and gut the Interior and then off to the Puleras where they will work their magic on the Body.......The Bumpers will also go out for re-chroming
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03639.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03641.jpg LOL............. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03645.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03647.jpg But....as Shoddy the body and paint on the car is....the "Important" stuff is in pretty good shape....Trunk floor is perfect......and there is just minor surface rust behind the rear bumper.....should clean up pretty easy......could be a lot worse http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03646.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03649.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC03650.jpg Time to start ordering parts ............ |

Now that the car is in the hands of the media blaster, get some golf rounds in before the assembly starts. Your "builds" are the best treads on here. Sipping a coffee and enjoying the progress! Paul |

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Cool. Question though...the media blasting won't affect the convertible top?

They seal it off with tarps.......and seal the edges....Plus the plastic media isn't aggressive...... |
Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Plastic media is awesome stuff. I use it in my cabinet all the time. Will strip paint off chrome, etc. Keep up the good work Ken!

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Picked the car up this afternoon......I'll post some better pic's tomorrow...but...In a nutshell........It's better than I thought......Remember, I have new fenders so I didn't have the old ones blasted, but....the Doors,Hood, Trunk Lid, Rockers are all in great shape........the wheel openings in both quarters had rust and had been patched..........Gonna have to get some patch panels and repair them correctly.......Not as bad as I expected, but......I'm glad we decided to blast the body to really see what was under that "Survivor" Nu Yawk Paint.....LOL
