Basically I am changing the 4 speed gear ratio from: 2.20 / 1.64 / 1.28 / 1.00

to: 2.52 / 1.88 / 1.46 / 1.00

It will be a lot better on the street and out of the hole at the strip.

Plus the gears are made of stronger material than a typical M20 and they are machined at a 20 degree helix angle on the gearset as opposed to a 30 degree angle.

If my math is correct it will make my 3.73 rear gears feel like 4.26 in 1st changing from a 2.20 to a 2.52 first gear.

You can also upgrade to the very strong, "Italian Gears"

Will the Italian Gears shell on 3rd too? I heard of 2 people that did but didn't know if it was BS.

I have done a little research on the M222W gears and have heard that they are supposed to be good up to 600hp and that 1st gear is the weak point.

I guess we'll find out! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

The source that told me was a tranny line tech at the local Chevy dealer for the last 31 or 32 years. He does about 10 muncies a year yet for local friends so I kinda trust what he says.

What he tried to tell me is that he personally popped a few from what he told me in his with a semi stock LS7 crate motor that he bought back in the 70s with 411s. He was telling me it didn't like powershifting and I don't remember if it was from 2-3 or 3-4.

Good lookin' motor with all that aluminum up on top! Hey......where's the aluminum water pump at? I've always loved the Gold Moroso valve covers, they're considered nostalgic to my generation and many bad-ass, fast Rat Motors always seemed to have them! I've had my share of them and they do tend to leak a bit sometimes because the aluminum distorts slightly when the bolts are tightened. Stock or aftermarket tabs really help 'em out!

Re: SOLD my 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan

I hope your close Dan but I'm not too sure about the whole numbers thing on the dyno. I think the real test will be at the track.

Mark, we do have a set of the aftermarket tabs for the valve covers, they weren't on yet.

A friend of mine that lived down the street when I was growing up had a '70 Chevelle with a 427 +.125 and 13.5 to 1 slugs. He had those valve covers on his motor which was back in the late 70's early 80's. I thought they would look somewhat correct plus I needed them to clear the stud girdle.

We got the motor on the dyno. With the set up that I have, let's just say, the motor ran very well. Thanks to everyone and your input. It helped me out a lot.

What are the specs on the motor (bore & stroke, cubic inches etc...)? What kind of power and torque did it put out?

69 Post Sedan 08-10-2010 05:07 PM

Re: SOLD my 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan

The bore is 4.165 and stroke is 3.76 = 410ci. 10.48:1 comp. with 077 aluminum heads.

The dyno numbers came out at came out at 421@6200 and torque was 398@4800.

Here is a link to some of the build: https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...6&page=all

Re: SOLD my 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan

Well, I hate to be the fly in the ointment, but those figures seem a bit low to me. To be frank, you've gotta be thinking the same thing after spending a pretty good chunk of change on some nice, premium parts. I've been watching your build and I liked your cylinder head, solid Roller camshaft, and intake choice. I've had similar solid roller BBC's that have made good power and I expected about 460-480 HP out of your motor. What do you think is holding it back from it's potential?

Re: SOLD my 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan

I would have figured more also, but as long as it's reliable. We built a 427 about 15 years ago using stock 3/8ths rods, factory comp 11-1 TRW pistons with BONE STOCK 840 heads and a roller cam. The son of gun put out just over 550 HP at 7000 using an Edelbrock victor manifold and a 1050 dominator. Our car weighed just at 3000 lbs and ran low 10.20's at 130 mph. Love the 427's. I have the 077's on my 427 (430hp) superstock motor, which are good heads if done correctly. That motor put out 772 with a very mild porting job per NHRA Volume specs. The 401 heads are the way to go, so if anyone wants a set of 077 heads complete you know where to find me. I want the 401 heads... Brian Oakes and few others are making 850-900 plus HP with their 427's, but are running the 401 GM head

Re: SOLD my 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan

I went with some friends to Union Grove's Great Lakes Dragaway last Wednesday. I had some issues at first which is to be expected the first time at the track with this car and a new motor.

I made 7 runs. The first was . After a few changes I got the car down to . The right lane timing lights weren't working at the 60'. I made a couple of runs in the left lane but only received one time slip. That was 2.161 60' which was my 13.87 run.

It wheelhopped something terrible so I couldn't do anything from the start. The cam said it's good until 6200 but I went quicker shifting at 7k.

It sure felt good to take it to the strip. The car felt at home there!!

Here are a couple of pictures. I'm trying to get the digital videos up on photobucket but I don't know how to get them on my computer first.

I purchased some QA1 adjustable rear shocks to eliminate the wheel hop. I know with a little more tuning it will be in the 12's.
