When starting your car say these 4 simple things to yourself,
1. I may not be alive tomorrow
2. This is a really cool car
3. I wonder how high an RPM I can shift at
4. I may not be alive tomorrow

I bet after saying this to yourself you will have alot more fun with your car.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

You have to enjoy the car no matter what version of "enjoyment" you subscribe to. If it is restoring the car to the last nut and bolt or just putting it back together to beat the crap out of it, Amen to both. You can't sit and think what might happen if I take it out on the road. I had a lightning bolt hit next to my garage a couple weeks ago and what was I thinking? Hey, I should have had that car out of there and on the road at the time.

I remember back in '86, right after I finished the restoration on my 71 hemicuda ragtop, the first show I brought it to was the Supercar Showdown. I had that thing rev'd up to 7200 rpm in high gear and what was I thinking? I was thinking, hey, this thing is at 7200 rpm and I am still losing to a g-d damn, 4-door red Impala with a 427/425 and a four speed. That's what I was thinking. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

As long as you guys want to continue the drive it vs. don't drive it argument, off topic though it may be, check this out: http://www.classicchevyandcorvetteshow.com/
Bob McDorman never drives any of these cars. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif
He also never puts the hood up on any of them, because that would require detailing of the engine compartment.
In the front row of Camaro's will be his ZL1. No mention will be made anywhere that it's a clone. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif
Personally, I like to drive my car. I refer to it as my "anti-depressant". I also tell people that since I'm sitting on the powertrain warranty, (my wallet), that it's not quite as abused as some, but more than others. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif
Now, having said all of that, is anyone going to bid on this ZL1, or should we just start another thread? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

It is, indeed, a very tough decision to make when it comes to driving or not driving. I too have a ton of money tied up in my AMC Matador resto (all #'s match except the engine, tranny, rear end and body panels). I think, however, when it is finally restored I will drive it like it was meant to be driven. I'm gonna put my foot flat on the floor and speed shift at 2800 rpm's and hold on for dear life (because you never really know what a Matador at full throttle will do). I AM going to own the car and not let it own me.

In the meantime, I think I'll just let others decide for themselves what they should do with their own car. Drive it, don't drive it, it isn't any of my concern or business.

By the way, no need to contact me, the Matador is not for sale. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Mark Donnally

Think of it this way. Here you are with a great car in your garage looking at it and babying it afraid to drive it as you might hurt it. Than one day you are forced to sell it and you get a great price for it, and you hand the keys to the new owner and he jumps in and smokes the tires all the way down the block with a grin from ear to ear. Would you not feel a little jealious that you never once did that?. Why keep it mint just so the next guy could enjoy it. Whats the point in having it if once in awhile you can't go out and give it what it was made for. Im not saying drive it till it blows up just run it through it's paces once in awhile, have fun life is short

My car serves that function too. There's just something about the sound, smell, and feel of driving my Camaro. Takes me back to my teenage years and all the fun we had crusing the Main (before it was outlawed), and trying to impress the girls. I guess my car is more of an emotional investment than a monetary investment. If I was heavily financially invested in a car I might be a little nervous about driving it but I'd still drive it.

Imagine yourself on your death bed in the hospital someday. All plugged in, IV'd, crapping in a pan and pissing through a catheter. Will you wish you'd enjoyed your possessions more? Only you decide how your life's script will be written.

Think of the movie "Tin Cup." Ray (Costner) goes for immortality on the 18th hole rather than the easy lay-up to force the playoff. Laying-up would be the smart play but he wants to be remembered. He knows that no one really remembers the winner but everyone will remember the guy who took a dozen swings to clear the water and get on the green. Ray knows it's the story that people remember.

If Frank or Marlin grenaded an engine during an SCR race they'd be respected by almost everyone here, plus it'd be a hell of a good story. The guys who are in this for making money will shake their heads at the loss in value but the rest of us will tell that story for the rest of our lives. It would be an immortal moment. Think of it, whomever grenades their engine racing at the SCR will be IMMORTAL.

"Remember when _________ blew-up his ________ in the lights at SCR __? Man, I'll never forget that!"

"Remember when _________ got a million for his _________ at auction?"

Which one is the better story? You decide.

Yeah, 4.88 gears were not such a great idea for a basically stock (original) engine. Should have stayed with the 4.10s.

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

Very thought provoking. With the valuations being what they are,and the less $respect NOM cars recieve,I'm sure the folks who are lucky enough to obtain original driveline cars are sure glad the previous owners took the preservation road. There are certainly enough CE blocks out there to validate the greater number that took the side stepping of the clutch approach early on in the cars life..just like when you went to super shop for $39.95 Hedman headers, and threw the smog and manifolds in the can,the significance was not apparent at the time.I have a 69 los Z with nary a stitch of paper-but the orignal DZ engine. If I decided to"enjoy" it and DX'ed the block, that would seriously affect it's value. It's being restored, and when done that engine will be on a stand and a 355 with Keisler T56 kit will be going in.Now if I want to rape it,no little man on my shoulder https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Re: ZL-1 # 40 on Ebay

I did the same thing, My 69 Z has an LT-1 and although I havent used it in years I use to drive the living piss out of it and the original motor is on a stand...Im about to have the car restored and Im leaving the LT-1 in it...As for original motors I am doubting how many are actually real and not restamped, those motors were not totally bullet proof and the big blocks use to eat valves like crazy. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smirk.gif You didnt order an L78 or 427 camaro to drive to and from work, you raced it and racing eats motors if done correctly.

Here is the way I look at it. Who here really care if this car goes for a million or even 2. The only ones that care are some brokers who will be blabbing about it on there cell phones imediately after the auction or a bunch of rich dudes standing around in there smoking jackets grand standing about what there cars are now worth that the new benchmark has been set. This thread has gone in a better direction with REAL car guys talking about driving there cars or reliving stories of the past about beating on there cars. If this thread makes one more guy go out and drive his trailer queen around the block then the thread was not in vain. I hope this car brings a lot for the sake of the owner but I would guess it is safe to say that NO active member of this board will be buying this car any time soon for that type of cake.
