The wife and I are right behind you in that picture, and it is the best chevelle show
on the planet. There a picture taken of us eight original owners but the club never said much about it. In that picture the guy standing next to me is my friend and long time car buddy. He bought his 70 SS chevelle from the same dealership as me only it had changed names, bought July 1970.My car is sneaking up on that 50yr. mark, can still remember driving off the car lot. Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Another fun Muscle Car day!!!!
Jamie's hockey team won their game in the morning!!! First place in house league, so far!!! I then visited an engine builder in Cambridge Engine Technology, I was very impressed with the engine projects on the go, his CNC machines, his manual machines, water brake dyno/break in stand. Billet Hemi heads, Olds 400, 455's, 350 Chevy's, all brands, all types, and lots of used engines for parts. I am trying to learn as much as I can before making any engine decisions, but I would be very confident in an engine build and tested here. Then read the Canadian hot rod magazine and found out I missed seeing a nice 69 F85 at Pumkinfest:-( looks like big rear tires:-) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_4211.jpg Sorted through all my boxes and labelled everything, except a few misc bins like this:-) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-img_4212.jpg Even the misc boxes are cool 1976.... last year the car was driven. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-img_4213.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_4214.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-img_4215.jpg Have to press off the bearings and sleeves https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-img_4219.jpg Found out I have to heat up these plastic plugs to get the original U-Joints out:-) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_4220.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-img_4221.jpg On Chevelle's I see a bumper/pinion snubber in the middle of the frame.... mine has a hole but no bumper..... should I add one? Is it a bumper for full down suspension travel of a pinion snubber like in leaf spring cars? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_4222.jpg Need to make up washers to repair the two rusted body mount areas on the frame, thickness looks like 10 gauge will do, 1.25" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_4223.jpg Terrible sketch to show bushing sizes in the upper ears of the rear end housing, and a reminder to borrow a 1 1/4 socket to remove the pinion shaft. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_4224.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
If there is no visual evidence of the rear end bumper snubber.....then it never had one. No reason to remove it, why would Al remove it?
I would ask this question to the Olds guys. if it did not have one....I would not add one. REMEMBER.....YOU HAVE A RARE OLDSMOBILE.....Treat it as it deserves Dan |

I still don't truly know what this bumper would do.... my assumption is it would come in contact with the rear end housing after going over a set of rail road tracks at a high rate of speed (Bottom out) With a four link the geometry/pinion angle is set by the links (and the arc of travel) not like a leaf spring car with axle wrap to reduce with a snubber..... I don't have any issue doing small GM bolt on improvements to my car, like trailing arms, and bumper/snubber for example, if it works better there is no downside. My focus is drive-abilty. "Day 1.5" Kind of like using those gorgeous NOS engine mount warranty improvement cable "thingys" on an L78/L89 Chevelle:-) Ryan I have to remind myself a few hundred times a week.............. RARE CAR, NOT A RARELY DRIVEN CAR!!!!! If I meet my goal of driving my car late in the summer of 2017 the car will have sat dormant for 40 years exactly, she may be rare but she needs a good run:-) |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I have done a little research in the assembly manual, what a treasure chest!!!
For example Chevelle's have a bracket to hold the brake lines above the rear end housing, but Olds is threaded right into the housing, as shown in the assembly manual. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...77-38611-2.png Started digging through my Inline Tube order this stuff is gold!!! I am so happy with the quality, looks like new parts. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...77-38612-1.png https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...77-38613-3.png https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...77-38614-4.png Lots of fun!! I also accidentally bought the rear bumper so I don't have to decide to use it or not...... I have it and I have a wrench:-) Lines look perfect, I thought I was missing the little lines from the front wheel cylinders to the flex lines, but they are right there, complete with special fittings just like the originals from the car:-) Ryan |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Great Muscle Car night!!!
Stephen J Minore called so we could talk engine build, he has offered to help in any way he can!! Thanks so much!! We talked short term, longer term, street vs drag, we talked about all the process's involved. He had a great explanation of car stuff, that you have for example a hundred tasks relating to one system of the car such as an engine, and you can sub them out but you would miss the fun of all hundred items. (This is how I feel about the engine, I want in on the fun!!!) I am not sure I articulated that sufficiently but the message is that the fun is in the journey!!! Great chat!!! Thanks again Steve!! Also: My parents stopped at Patton Glades to pick up my gas tank pad:-) Turns out he lives in Texas so Mom and Dad really went out of their way to buy me car parts:-) (kidding) I have to say car guys going above and beyond to help me is feeling more the norm these days, and Patton is no exception, he send me screws for the trim below my windshield and the clip for the gas tank wire above the tank that normally gets ruined during tank removal. How nice is that? Going to bed with a good feeling about humanity tonight!!! (Not joking) Ryan |

Cool stuff Ryan and amazing all that's happened in 12 months as next week will be one year since you first learned your W31 Post car even existed. Again nice to see your family involved w/ your project also I'm still hoping to swing by the igloo on one of my trips to Woodstock, just too much happening the last few times I went. Looking forward to your progress through year two! ~ Pete |

Getting organized for the media blaster/powder coater.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Why did you not press out your u-joints yet? I thought you had the use of a press? Duct tape your Spindle`s well before taking them to blaster.
Looking good.....a very nice pile of parts Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I just learned how to remove the U-joints, there are tiny holes on the sides of each yoke beside each cap with small blue plastic "pins" that need to be melted out. I have only seen u-joints with circlips'
Olds guys say I need to melt these out while being careful not to get the molten splatter on myself or others, and that the replacements will somehow use circlips..... I have to see it to really understand it. I hope to do that this Saturday. I had really slowed myself down trying to get every part powdercoated in one shot, so I narrowed my focus (leaving some items like alternator beaker, and pulleys for a future batch) and now have the pictures for the powdercoated so he can quote. (Got stuck) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
PS: the powder coater said to let them mast the parts with high heat tape, so I will use a grease marker to highlight all the areas needing to be preserved such as the spindles, and the bushing area on control arms, etc.
I think you are meaning before sandblast and that makes sense we didn't talk about that. Point dully noted:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Are you having everything powdercoated black or different colors?

Ryan
Correct Second round of powder coat - inner fenders and core support? Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I am moving again, kind of got overwhelmed for a week or so:-(
My brain is now on track, and focused on these parts, and the engine parts, and front clip parts can be round two. (I don't want to take everything apart at one time) Amateur here!!! Darrell: Yes 60 degree gloss black for most of the items, and a grey/cast/raw steel colour for the parts that were not painted before assembly. I am interested in a correct look that will look the same in five years with minimal polishing, and recoating, etc. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ryan, I'm in the dealership all day tomorrow, stop in and have a look at the press and what we may need to do the suspension
bushings. |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Not sure about Olds but the center link on the Camaro was a gun metal gray blue. Not sure if they have that powder color but that is just something Ive noticed with my project..
|
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
The places I have visited can powder coat any colour under the sun but you have to pay for each colour:-)
I am limiting my resto Powdercoating to 2 colours based on cost, I originally thought of doing an all black chassis resto but have seen the light:-) Ryan |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Good stuff guys!!!
Thanks RamblinDealer, I used his press to remove the axle bearings and seal rings. I also removed the front lower control arm ball joints, round bushings, oval bushings, front upper control arm cross shafts, and bushings. Other than the two bushings in the upper mounts of the rear end I am done suspension disassembly:-) I borrowed the neighbors small torch to heat the U-joint housings to melt the blue plastic out to release the caps, this was new to me and ended up in a major safety hazard:-( NO Injuries) I heated a few and the blue plastic exited the tiny holes nicely, then as I heated another one the cap popped out of the driveshaft and banged into the eve trough, my assumption is that the grease inside the cap after being heated lit on fire and the heat/pressure built up under the cap, then as soon as the heat expanded the ring around the cap enough to release it the cap shot out like a rocket:-( I was working almost outside the garage and was staying well back at the time so just a near miss. Feel free to chime in if you know the error of my ways. I got the rest out without issue, so the driveshaft is ready for media blasting and Powdercoating too:-) Then I was on such a roll I had the tools borrowed to finish disassembling the rear end, removed the pinion shaft, bearings, pinion seal, outer races of the tapered roller bearings, crush sleeve, etc:-) (just remembered I need to remove the axle seals) I will post a few pictures tomorrow:-) Today was a real critical day, I was pretty stuck! Thanks again Terry for the use of the press, that got me going again!! Ryan |
