Re: Sam Griffith's 1969 L78 Chevelle...WOW!
Hey Lee,
How's the fleet? Thanks for the comments. Yeah, even a blind pig will find a truffle once in awhile. I feel truly fortunate to be the caretaker of this Chevrolet. The layers of stories with this car are so rich and interesting and they are known because of the terrific attitude and enthusiasm of Wayne. Some of you keen observers will have noticed that this car has front and rear bumper guards on the car. They don't appear on the order form or dealer invoice, but they have been on the car since Wayne brought it home. Wayne was having breakfast at this parent's home one morning while he was waiting for his car to be delivered (13 long weeks). He was lamenting that his car just NEEDED the bumper guards to set off the car "just right". Well his Mom and Dad surprised Wayne by contacting the dealership and ensuring that the guards were on the car as a surprise to Wayne. Things like that and the remote mirror are contrary to a street/drag racing brute, but make this car all the more interesting to me. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...2/P1010891.jpg |

Re: Sam Griffith's 1969 L78 Chevelle...WOW!
Wayne has been able to get his hands on a few more photos and slides and forwarded these to me recently. This shot is the 1st day home from the dealership - Friday, 13 April 1969. Wayne was very happy and proud that day and took the time to chronicle his big day...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...velle030_2.jpg *** LICENSE PLATE FRAME *** http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...lle030_2_2.jpg I have been contacting all the antique shops in the area of Rocky Mount VA. Altho, some say they see Wickline stuff (now closed) from time to time, I have not snatched a license plate frame yet. Let me know if anyone comes across one! Thanks https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

Still more https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif photos! Really neat, Sam https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Hmmmmm, first day of ownership was Friday the 13th https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Obviously wasn't bad luck for this car, though https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Re: Sam Griffith's 1969 L78 Chevelle...WOW!
Here Wayne is lining up against a big red bowtie....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...hevelle018.jpg Most of the photos that Wayne just sent to me are quite faded. I am playing with bringing back the color and breaking in a new scanner. I have little experience in either department https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif . Bear with me. |

Re: Sam Griffith's 1969 L78 Chevelle...WOW!
Wayne and his wife towing the Chevelle to the races. This is the '66 Ford pick up, that Wayne's Dad owned, that inspired the black/red color combo of his Chevelle.

I love looking at that car - Beautiful!
What a fabulous find to come up with the original pictures like that!! Priceless!! |
Re: Sam Griffith's 1969 L78 Chevelle...WOW!
Man, that is some good stuff. The original owner of my 69 SS said she had pictures of it new with her kids by the car, but has yet to be able to find them. Her mother (the orignal owner) may have tossed them in her old age.
My car is a near twin to Sam's but with the 325 hp engine and 4 speed trans. No race history, it was Mabel Summerlin's grocery/church car. Thanks for sharing those great photos!!!!!! Phil Woj. |
Re: Sam Griffith's 1969 L78 Chevelle...WOW!
