One other thing, I believe BAT will ban those that don’t follow through on purchase. |
Thanks Crush. I reached out to BAT to let them know what was happening this morning, so I expect I will hear back later today. Hopefully, this doesn't turn out to be a huge waste of time.

That sucks Mark.Guess bidding is easy but coming up with the $ is another matter.
|
That really sucks. What kind of moron bids on a classic car without having funds in hand?
|
I’ve had it happen on eBay a couple of times. Sucks, sorry to hear this Mark.

I haven’t dealt with JJ Best for years, but 20 years ago it seemed like they waited a couple days before flipping a coin to decide if the loan was approved or not. Hopefully he’s just waiting for them to decide his loan fate.

I had a buyer slow play me on BaT for my 67, first of all said he didn't expect to win so needed time to get the funds. I told him 3 days or I sell it to someone else. Then, he had the funds but wanted to inspect it before paying. I told him no. Finally, he acquiesced, paid me by wire, and drove overnight to get the car. In the end, it was OK. Some people just don't behave like most. He was a nervous buyer, not inherently a jerk. As much as work as it takes (I am a pretty intense person in business), I have learned to be patient to a greater extent before I lose my sh1t with people. It's a shame not everyone does business the right way, but maybe he will come through...
I kept BaT in the loop on the whole thing and they took my side all the way. Even offered to reach out to the buyer and remind him of his obligations to follow through. As quirky as BaT can be, my experiences selling and buying have been generally quite favorable. |
Thanks for the supportive comments guys. I think he is a genuinely nice guy who bit off more than he can chew and didn’t think the process through. I heard from him today and he has been trying to get things in order. I’ve offered to refund him $400 to pay for brokerage and will hold the car for 3 months if he gives me a deposit. Ball is in his court now…

Very kind of you Mark.
Speaking of "didn't think I would win" type auctions, that has happened to me.... but I STILL didn't bid unless I had the cash. It usually just means I have to explain to Sherri why I am driving 3.5 hours (one way) to pick up something I paid $21 for; which I will be doing Friday morning when I leave the house at 3:30 a.m. I am such a dumbass. But, it is a cool Sun diagnostic machine (VAT 40) that semi matches my existing Sun machines. Its just cool.... and functional. |
Hope it all works out Mark.

I looked your buyer up. As you probably know Mark, he's one of these guys that drills people about their listings and has plenty of bids that are well below the money on the given car.
I think he likes the talk the talk, with out being able to walk the walk. Hope it works out. To Nick's point, BaT is very supportive in this respect. Tim |
Yes, I did too Tim and didn't want to say too much. The $130K bid on the Mustang that sold for $200k plus was very telling to me. I think he has 190 bids during the last year all well below the selling price! BAT charged him $2,900 for my purchase, so I suspect that might curb his bidding for a while LOL!
As for the car, no response on my offer to hold the car and I just learned from the shipping company that his excuse of not being able to import the car without a valid passport is a lie, so I notified BAT this morning that the sale was not going through and sent them the emails from the guy. Apparently, BAT has a dept that looks after this sort of thing. No matter what happens, I think a no sale might hurt a future sale as people will wonder what happened. Pisses me off to be honest. I'll see what BAT says, but if I have the option, I think I would rather keep the car and relist it next year in the Spring if I still want to sell it. I plan on getting it out this weekend for a drive. Something that I had planned to do when I bought it but never really got around to doing because of the Covid restrictions up here. When you have a car for sale and answer a bunch of questions and take pics of details etc. it really makes you appreciate a special car a little more. I know that there is no way one could restore this car for $58,000. |
----Feel your pain, Mark! It certainly doesn't sound even remotely like you are desperate. Probably more a storage issue. Sit on it, or maybe I should say "sit in it" and enjoy it till the spring as you say. It crossed too cheap and you need to distance yourself from that. You'll not regret it!.....Bill S

Thanks Bill. You are right, I have the money and a wife that doesn’t care what I buy, so that is covered. However, we have a 3 car garage with a lift and we have 6 cars in the family. So, one of 2 daily drivers would have to hit the driveway. My wife’s is an RX350 and they get stolen regularly in our neighbourhood. So, it would be my Macan S out in the snow which doesn’t thrill me, but could happen.
BAT reached out to the second high bidder and he’d like to talk. I agree with you and think the car should have brought more. So, the price is the price as far as I am concerned. My wife thinks I should just keep it and put some miles on it and she is probably right…but don’t tell her that I said that! |
Mark, Jeff in nj. I’m vaulting one of my garages to put in a lift to put my 70 Monte that Jason restored. I’d be happy to put the Camaro on top of the Monte in the climate controlled garage. I promise I wouldn’t drive it without your permission.

Thanks Jeff! I appreciate the offer and will keep it in mind if I end up 30th too many cars!

Final update…under bidder wanted it for $55K, so I am just going to keep it. Going for a drive tomorrow!
|
Another update…the BAT after sales rep that I’m working with, Dave, is trying hard to make things right. He is still trying to work a deal with the original auction winner, but has assured me that they will run the car through again at no cost to me should that not work out.
Frankly, I’m indifferent at this point, but I really appreciate his attempts to get my car sold. |
One more update...more for those who are interested in the BAT process than those interested in the car. BAT offered to run the car again or refund my money. I thought that was fair of them (they did get paid the $2,900 BAT fees from the flakey bidder). I opted to take the refund and keep the car.

Thanks for continuing on chronicalling the whole experience for benefit of the rest of us here Mark! All very interesting also learning too but more than anything, I'm really impressed w/ the BAT group!:flag: :beers: ~ Pete . |

Thanks Guys.
Woodrock, that is exactly what I am thinking. I love the car, but really want to finally get the 67 L78. So, I was selling in anticipation of that as I can really only hold 2 "fun" cars without kicking my or my wife's daily into the driveway. And let's be honest, how many "fun" cars does a guy really need :) Anyway, I know that the condition and options on my L48 are pretty special and while small blocks don't bring great money, you couldn't come close to replicating that car for $58k. I guess I'll be parking in the driveway or storing one of the cars off-site. Again, no big deal really, just something that I guess I hadn't really considered seriously. As for the L78, the owner just called me this afternoon to update me on the painting progress and ask me a few questions about how I wanted things done. Maybe this time it will actually make it into my garage! |
