It's back home.

Still lots of details: sidemarker lights, grill, bumpers, spears etc.

Overall, pretty darn happy with it.

Not bad for an amateur shooting black in the garage.

Grill, emblems, side markers, and my bent (not bad) rear bumper installed. May send the bumper out next year and get it straightened and rechromed. Just want to enjoy the car for a while.
Driveline vibration is almost gone with the new driveshaft. Will measure runout at rear and see if I need new yoke in the diff. Seems I remember suspecting that yoke 30 years ago.

Left to be done: paint and install front bumper, install "302" emblems in the hood, install headlight bezels, install NOS tail light lenses, painting the YH wheels, and some hand polishing hear and there.

Took pics for the insurance co. today. BTW, if you are insuring a classic, call Tamra at MK (one of our sponsors). They were half the price of going through our regular insurer, and we got better coverage.

Hmmm... going to have to cut back a bit on driving. Only allowed 6000 miles per year and have put on 500 in a week. Sure is fun though. Need to get the darn bumper painted and installed. Kind of hard to do while going down the road.

Did get the 5 yh ralley wheels blasted, covered in DLP90, then black enamel engine paint, then silver enamel on the outside. Even got some silver overspray just like the originals I have observed. I used an old BMW strut housing with a hub on it. Bolt pattern is almost identical to the Camaro (off by .65 mmm) but easy to bolt on and spin the wheel for painting.

Thanks.

OK, so there is no such thing as DLP90. Meant DP90LF.

Sandblasted to get them as clean as I could.

Cleaned the residue with lacquer thinner.

Shot them with Permatex Rust Treatment. They turned all shades of dark gray and black. You would think there would be no rust to interact with the treatment, but because springs are so hard, there are tiny tiny pockets of rust.

Let them set 48 hours and cleaned with scotch pad.

Shot with a thin coat of Duplicolor Ceramic Engine Enamel, DE1651, "Cast Coat Iron". Not quite as dull as the factory finish, but pretty close to the color.

Short answer: Like CRAP.

I already pulled them off in favor of modern radials. WAY better. Have the Firestones mounted on my YH ralleys (as of last night), stored in the garage, so I can put them on in about 30 min if I decide I want the vintage look. The radials are on a set of FW wheels.

Lynn, BEAUTIFUL CAR- nothing beats a clean straight black car!! I agree with your tire comments its a shame because I like the look of the the squared off bias tires I just cant see paying triple for a crappy riding tire. the only bad things about Black cars is seeing all the dust as it accumulates and having to park it in the sun!

Re: Updated pics of my project

Lynn,

A suggestion on the application of the paint on the springs. The product you're useing is good. I do like to dust on POR cast iron with a binks 7, but lets get back to the dusting part. Most people paint a part as directed on the can for best application. With the cast colors, you're trying to copy the look, and TEXTURE of the part. After you have adequate coverage, I'd suggest about 2-3 dust coats from 2-3 feet back, or as you will see with this application, what looks good to you as far as an original look, and texture.
Only painted never looks right to me. I like the look, and feel of how the casting would have been when new. JMHO.

Ken:

As ALWAYS, input from a pro is greatly appreciated. Actually, I painted very similar to what you describe. I did two very thin coats from about 18 inches with the rattle can. I will post some more pics next time I get it in the air.
So far, everyone looking at the springs asks if they are new. They don't appear to be painted. Probably good enough for a car that is getting driven. Even got my first rock chip in the body. Lost no sleep over it. Lacquer touches up pretty easily.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I am a little surprised the car came out so nice considering the crappy lighting I had painting it in the garage. I was fully expecting to find some flaws in the body. The only two panels that aren't perfectly straight are the cowl vent and the header; which, other than the GM hood, are the only two non-original panels on the car!!!! GM in the box parts that I incorrectly assumed were straight. Fortunately, the imperfections on both are within the white stripes, so not very noticeable. I have a very good friend who owns and operates a body shop. We had to drop off Sherri's MRoadster for some work and he and his main metal guy were looking at the Z. I was pointing out the few flaws, and he put his hand up and said: "Still, this thing is ridiculously straight. It may be the straightest black car I have ever laid eyes on." Made me feel pretty good coming from a pro.

Still need to paint the trunk, paint and install the front bumper, install the rear bumper guards and install the rocker trim. Been having fun driving it from time to time. Only big issue has been the posi unit, which is now resolved. See here:
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...882#Post534882

Also, been distracted the last 3 weeks. Sherri got bit by a fiddleback. That's another story.

Haven't posted any pics in over a year.

Put the bias ply tires in storage and put on some centerlines with BFG radials. Have all the trim and emblems on now. I think the last engine shot I had was with the Moroso gold air cleaner. Have the right air cleaner set up on now, including the unrestored top and a really old original seal. I know the purists won't like the headers and Accell wires, but I like the wires, and it runs better with headers. I do have the manifolds and all the smog equipment, as well as a Walker exhaust system I purchased in 1983. It is all correct, except for the chrome tips.

Enjoying the car a lot. Didn't put as many miles on it as I thought I would, but I try to drive it at least once per week, weather permitting.

Only thing not done on the outside is the bumper. Still undecided whether to install a chrome or a GM endura bumper. Decisions decisions.

Re: Updated pics of my project

I think I will put the chrome one on... for now. I have a very nice rechromed front bumper that is ready to go if I can find all the brackets. We are getting ready to move (hopefully) and so much stuff is in storage. The endura bumper isn't painted yet, and who know when I will get to it.

Also, my rocker spears are a bit more dinged up than I remembered. Are they flash chromed like the window trim? If not, I can to some straightening and polishing. If I can't make these look good, are there any REALLY GOOD repros (I know, probably an oxymoron) available? If so, who has them?

Here you go Verne: I like it. Hard to get a good pic with this much sunlight (at least for an amateur like me). I may be selling a very nice GM endure bumper....then again, I may just wait and see how it looks before deciding that.

Very sorry to hear this about S&S Headers. They made the only off-the-shelf header I could find for my old '55 Gasser that would fit with all the engine setback. They also had a great website with tech info pages on exhaust scavenging which has always been an interesting subject.

Re: Updated pics of my project

Well, I may have to buy a pair. Turns out the ones I thought I scored at a reasonable price were just the retainers. A well meaning member sent me the link, and I didn't read it carefully. Fortunately, the vender is accepting the return, as I have no need for them. My retainers are in perfect condition.

Thanks for the kind words on my car guys. I am pretty proud of it, considering Sherri and I painted it in the garage.

Lynn 09-06-2014 01:09 AM

Re: Updated pics of my project

Considering just doing the spears myself. I know, once you figure in your time, it is cheaper to buy new.
Back to my question: were these spears flash chromed? I know the window trim was flash chromed, and it makes it very difficult to get them looking perfect just polishing them.
