LOL, a few of my frisbees have dog teeth marks in them...

I really think the golden age of the CC Nat's was 77-81 when it was at Indianapolis. Cars were still basic street driven cars..cars we could all relate to back then and today. Most still had true Day 2 parts on them and were modified much like the early to mid 70's. Starting in the early 80's era the cars just got silly with one upmanship...c/mon fuel funny car style cages in street cars.. Cars just became hokey...caricatures if you will.

The earlier Nat's still had wheel barrow races and spark plug changing contest..more laid back and fun. People just lounged around. Later ones turned into more of a full on competition with the participants, professionalism might be a better term? and I think some of the earlier charm of the events went away.

For instance I remember when a super hot car came rolling in people would literally run, yes run as in sprinting in large groups to see the car park etc. Today it's just hohum one of many. Even I don't get that real excitement anymore at events. The early Nat's was one of the first real places where folks from rural, less urban areas saw some really nice cars...stuff we only saw in magazines. Maybe that is why these early shows are so special to so many people.

Not trying to highjack the thread here, but I have a question for everyone to weigh in on.

What has happened to kids these days? Has social media replaced going out in town and hanging out with each other in person?

I know they have a lot more things to occupy their time, video games, internet, etc., but I can't see how those things can be more fun than spending time with each other, together.

How can texting: What's up?..lol...omg.., be more fun than a car load of friends experiencing what Saturday night might bring?

Kids are just strange these days... I have seen teenagers texting each other while seated in the same room...

I am trying to get my 7 year old nephew involved in liking cars and going to take him to some car shows this summer and for rides in the musclecars..

Thanks, here is the thread on how I picked my rims and tires https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...ARS#Post478729,

I have the same shifter boot as you and I cleaned it with some simple green, I also have the same tear in mine if you figure out a way to fix it let me know, until then I made mine a single shifter boot, can you figure out how I did it?

Aha, 670-15 Firestones. They look really good on your car, but I think I'd probably be better off with the shorter 640-15s on my Nova.
Does your Chevelle stop as well as it did before you went to the skinnies?

Re: Addicted to day 2, chevelle transformation help?

no problems stopping, the only thing I have noticed is not having a radial tire on the rear, the MT are harsh driving

your car looks sweet. My uncle has a 72 malibu he bought new. still has the usa1 plate, cragars, and blue fur on the speaker shelf with a plastic hand giving the peace sign mounted on it.

Re: Addicted to day 2, chevelle transformation help?

Hello all, My first post here although I have been checking out the rides posted. I lived the Day2 era cruising hempstead tpke, Burger King in Bethpage L.I., NY National Speedway, Westhampton Raceway and apparently I'm reliving it again with my 70 chevelle! I really like the look of your 69 chevelle day2killa with the cragars, tow tabs etc. I knew a guy from East Meadow back in the late 70's that had the same car, white , black vinyl top, small block with a 4 spd. His name was Gary, had a gas station I think off Newbridge Road? North of Hempstead tpke. The green 70 malibu in other posts is sweet too! I thought I was the only one that dug this stuff, lol. Anyway, I'll try and post some pictures for your reviews in the next day or so.

Thanks guys for the welcome. day2killa, wish I could make that show but I would have to trailer the car from Florida to attend, lol. Route 109, you mean the "other drag strip" we used to race on back in the day, haha.
Anyhow I have a few pictures to post, it is a car in progress but let me know what you guys think of my old school ride.

Re: Addicted to day 2, chevelle transformation help?

Thanks for the comments guys. Mark, I'm in Palm Beach Co. Nice chassis build pictures above, havent seen the ladder bar brace though but it makes sense since they would tear out the frame at the bracket locations. Are those Lakewoods? NMW? NOS, restored or new? Looks good with the yellow color, just do the tow bar brackets to match.

My car has a high compression 454, LS-7 clone, solid roller, modern AFR 305 cyl heads (I know not correct for the day) but I wanted the most power and none of the issues with the old alum GM heads cracking and breaking stud bosses. The intake is an early 80's edelbrock victor 2r with the angled carb (gets alot of comments at car shows), 850 dp, accel dist and ign coil triggering an msd 6al hidden under dash. Clutch is a mcleod diaphram, trans is a 2:62 1st super t-10 with an iron case and center support. 4:10 gear out back. Had a centerforce clutch and had big issues with the release at high rpms. I found the spring assisted ring would move off center and cause uneven disengagement pressures blocking the shift. So far no problems with the conventional clutch diaphram.
Anyhow, thats whats in the car for anyone interested.
Glenn

Re: Addicted to day 2, chevelle transformation help?

I'm digging this modern take on the Day 2 Chevelle thread. Nice job by everyone. The NMW ladder bar brace was a separate part number, and I believe is came out later but I would love to have one when I put my bars back on.

Glenn, sound like a really fun car. I love the Lakewood red rollbar along with everything else. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more.

Hi Glenn..

Kick ass car. Wow.

The AFR heads are fabulous from what I hear and I'd to try some too. I have two small questions...I think on most of the AFR heads, there is no intake bolt between the top of the ports on a BBC (most aftermarket manufacturers leave it out). I can't quite tell in the photos if your old E-Brock intake was setup for the bolts. How did you deal with it? Also, how did the headers fit with the raised exhaust ports?

Thanks in advance.

Wayne

Re: Addicted to day 2, chevelle transformation help?

Paul, I thought the brace was used on the camaro leaf spring ladder bars but I could be mistaken. Wayne, yes the AFR heads are not drilled for the "extra" bolts the old intakes have. I just cut down 4 intake bolts, used a hi strength silicone and glued them in place, lol. Looks correct and since they really are not needed its all good. As far as the raised exhaust ports and headers, that was interesting. The headers are 2" tube Hookers and hit the frame on both sides. So I bolted them on and on a lift pryed them over a bit towards the inside using a long pipe! Well they fit ok then but prying the headers caused them to crack at the flange welds. So out they came and I tig welded all the flange ports. Oh and the header paint is another story.

Re: Addicted to day 2, chevelle transformation help?

The ladder bars on my post car chassis are NOS NMW pieces that I had powdercoated yellow. They came in red oxide primer but I like the yellow. I've got the tow tabs (powdercoated black) and a tow bar (on the way).

Re: Addicted to day 2, chevelle transformation help?

James, the cross bar was in a different box than the rest of the ladder bar kit, right? I've only seen literature without the bar included as the standard kit. Later literature calls it out as an optional item. Do you think your bars came with the cross bar as one complete kit?

They look great!

Re: Addicted to day 2, chevelle transformation help?

Glenn, great ride! I have been continplating how far to go to a drag look on my chevelle, I really like that you did the cool can under the hood I have an NOS one and just have not installed, now I think it needs to be done. Its funny I have some pics of your car one in a garage and one at a evening car show. Do you have any old pics of Long Island cars?

They were in the box with the ladder bars and accessories. The box was open however and could have been put in there after the fact.

Re: Addicted to day 2, chevelle transformation help?

killa, You know its funny but not many folks I knew took many pictures of cars back in the day except maybe a few polaroids of their pride and joy or at the track or maybey a car show. I took some pictures of my own stuff but that was about it. How times have changed, lol. I do remember when portable vhs video cameras came around, had to carry the the recorder part and hold the camera to tape stuff, but thats another discussion for another topic.
Thanks for the compliments on the black 70. The cool can is something that alot of "race" cars used, the original ones were just aluminum cans, I think Mr Gasket made them then. No cork insulation like the later morosos had, then they evolved into blue color plastic tanks.
I know theres some pictures out there of my black car at a few shows and my other 70 that I've had since 1976. That car was the real deal Day2 back in the day.
