my 04A 1969 Camaro SS came from the factory with Goodyear Polyglas tires-but they are the ones with the white pin stripe, not raised letters.

Is the statement based on having the OE spare or OE documentation?

It was very common to swap out tires in those days. An 04A car would have been ordered about March 1.

I based it on the original mint spare tire on original mint Rally wheel. Tire says POLYGLAS, Chassis broadcast reads in box 292: size F70-14, RTG 4, Ply 2 Mat B, Wall T. Box 287: YJ. The original owner could have changed the spare at some time I suppose? We used to rotate the spare with the other tires during tire rotations. This car had 62,000 miles when I bought it so thats about 3 sets of tires on bias plys!

I ordered a set of five repro F70 14 Goodyear Wide Treads, should be here next week.

Related question:

When the car has body-colored steel wheels (i.e. XT wheels with dog dish hubcaps), is only the face of the wheel painted body color? Or is the entire wheel painted?

Thanks.

I was buying cars in those days. You would have been a very conservative driver to get 20,000 miles on OE bias-ply rags.

The 'RTG' must mean rating. Many 2-ply tires had 4-ply ratings.

I checked-PY4 F70 x 14 FG belted ws tires were added as of April 1, 1969. XT or any other wheel only had the outer surface painted body color when used with hub caps. The back side remained dip or e-coat black.

William:
I agree with the RWL belted (Polyglas)tires available very late for Camaro in '69 and perhaps installed on a few cars. But belted red stripe and white stripe were available for all of 69 and also 68. Among other Chev docus, they are listed in the Finger Tip Facts for 68 and 69. Because of the relatively high option cost, I believe few cars were so equipped. I've never seen a period photo with a red or white stripe belted (you can tell by the tread), but some photos aren't clear enough to see.

Is there body color overspray on the back of the wheels on original cars?

Mrrec you are confusing belted with FG belted [aka Polyglas].

The FG belted tires were added as of 1 April 69. Nylon belted rode like fork lift tires and wore like art-gum erasers.

Wheels painted body color should have some overspray on the backside.

William:
I don't think I'm confused....well, maybe sometimes.... I'm not sure....Anyway, I've never heard of, nor seen any evidence of anything other the Fiberglass or Steel used as tire BELTS (and I sold tires in the 70's at Harvey's Standard, which has to make me an expert.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif ).

Don't confuse the lack of belted Raised White Letter availability with belted red or white stripe. Both non-belted and belted red or white stripe were available. My 68 Dealer price list with an April '68 revision, clearly shows red and white stripe belted available (PW4 and PW5 I think). These same RPO numbers are listed in 69. These are FIBERGLASS belted tires, but, again, only available in late 68 and all of 69 as red or white stripe.

Calling Mr70 Rick: what RPO number is listed for 1970 belted white stripe?

Dave

RPO PY-4 is a 1970 F70X14 Bia Belted White Stripe tire.
