Dick Harrell was forced to change to Hemi power to stay competitive as GM lost out in the fuel classes for a short duration in 1971. The Hemi block was superior in strength allowing for higher mixtures of nitromethane, to make power? Also, speciality engine builders were common to the winners circle.

Still running Chevrolet power during the 70 season with Fred Gibb as a sponsor. Dick Harrell would switch to the Hemi power for only a short period of time before the accident in September 1971.
