On the street versions of the 1969 Charger Daytona and 1970 Superbird the two rear facing scoops on top of the front fenders served no purpose. But on the race cars they performed a very vital function - unknown to NASCAR - they exhausted air from under the car and air that went into the engine compartment - air that would reduce the speed of the car by having very large holes under the scoops. Chrysler told NASCAR they were for tire clearance which was an allowable body modification. The total package of the nose cone, rear wing and air exhausters resulted in a drag reduction of 19%. The 19% reduction: nose cone 12.5%, air exhausters 3% and the rear wing 3.5%
